The solar-powered barrier meant to clean the Great Pacific Garbage Patch hasn't collected any loads of trash because it's moving more slowly than the plastic it's trying to capture. Its inventor, Boyan Slat, now 24 years old and a crew of engineers are working to speed the massive machine up to be able to collect an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic have coalesced into a field of debris twice the size of Texas

The 90 belugas and 11 Orca captured by a russian company this summer are being help in a so-called whale prison in Far East Russia. The whales are held in a total of 10 cells, appearing to be not much bigger than basketball courts according to a video posted by Russia today. Floridians Tuesday banned offshore oil and gas drilling in Florida’s state waters with the apparent passage of Amendment 9. The constitutional amendment prohibits oil and gas exploration activities three miles into the Atlantic Ocean and nine miles into the Gulf of Mexico. Amendment 9 also includes a ban on vaping within indoor spaces.

The European Parliament has voted 571-53 for a complete ban on plastic cutlery and plates, cotton buds, straws, drink-stirrers and balloon sticks. The proposal also calls for a reduction in single-use plastic for food and drink containers like plastic cups. The EU hopes it will go into effect across the bloc by 2021.

On Friday, The President of the United States signed into law, The Save Our Seas Act, which was passed with bi-partisan support earlier this summer, reauthorizes the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Marine Debris Program through 2022, giving it $10 million a year, and provides resources to help states respond to severe marine debris events in an attempt to combat plastic pollution in the ocean.
