What role does empathy play in your life and how has it helped you?
Empathy plays a roll in my everyday life by helping me understanding people's motivations. For instance, I when
have an interaction with someone who is acting out, I say the phrase "Oh, they must be having a bad day".
This phrase instantly helps me understand that person's state of mind. It reminds me of being in a like place
and helps me not to react in fold but to stay calm and present.
How does empathy help you build better software?
Building software for others to use takes an understanding of different prospectives. A view from somewhere other then my own.
Empathy helps in software development because it let's you see how else you can build something. You change your perspective
and new ways of to get things done open up. You could come up with other ways the software could be useful.
Why is empathy important for working on a team?
Empathy is important in a team because it helps everyone understand where each other is coming from and be more open to ask
questions without fear, guilt, or judgement. It opens the door to better colaborations.
Describe a situation in which your ability to empathize with a colleague or teammate was helpful.
I've used empathy to help me listen to fellow collegues to which I use this information to help make changes for them that
help with our work environment.
When do you find it most difficult to be empathetic in professional settings? How can you improve your skills when faced with
these scenarios?
I find it difficult to be empathetic when I feel like I'm looked down to. Especially when I see the actions from such situations
from the particular person. I will use the techniques from the article "The Secret to Taking Criticism Seriously-Not Personally".
Make a list with three columns: 1. What they said 2. What's 'wrong' with the what was said 3. What might be right
Number 2 let's me vent
Number 3 makes sure I don't lose the value in what was said
From there move on to problem solving and ask myself if number 3 was completely true, what do I need to do with it. Use the
'if' language to help me process the information. This lanuage helps remove the personal emotion.
