How to launch games via Proton from CLI (useful for debug)

How to launch games via Proton from CLI (useful for debug)

In just 2 steps

First. Run this:

export STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata

Second. Now in the same terminal, run your game (this example: Raft)

~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton\ 5.13/proton run ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Raft/Raft.exe

How to run another .exe in an existing proton wine prefix

Running games through Steam's Proton is great. But what if there is a secondary exe or configuration application bundled with the game? How can you launch it if Steam itself only launches the game?

Simply run this command in a terminal:

cd /path/to/steam/steamapps/compatdata/20920/pfx

STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH="/path/to/steam/steamapps/compatdata/20920" WINEPREFIX=$PWD \
    "$HOME/.steam/root/steamapps/common/Proton 5.0/proton" run ./drive_c/path/to/custom_application.exe

Plex Media Permissions for Linux Noobies

Plex Media Permissions for Linux Noobies

There is no problem with being a noobie and I do not use the term to sligtht or disparage anyone.

This is a way to setup your permissions for running Plex in Linux. Different folks may use different methods.

The permissions concepts provided here apply to OSX, but the users and groups are controlled and modified differently, so much of this will not work properly. I think the command is dscl, but that could be out of date.

There are many ways to setup your permissions scheme in Linux, this methodology describes a way to do it, not everyone will like it, but it works for me, so whatever.

How to manage the support libraries in a multi-module projects. Thanks to Fernando Cejas (http://fernandocejas.com/)

Centralize the support libraries dependencies in gradle

Working with multi-modules project, it is very useful to centralize the dependencies, especially the support libraries.

A very good way is to separate gradle build files, defining something like:

root
  --gradleScript
 ----dependencies.gradle
