Distant Horizons shader compatibility information

Distant Horizons v2.0.0 (and up) shader compatibility information.

Prerequisites

  • Iris v1.7.0 or higher, or Oculus v1.6.15aDH or higher
  • Distant Horizons v2.0.2a or higher
  • A compatible shaderpack, see the shaderpacks section below

Install guide

Visit the Iris Discord server for an install guide, see the #dh-compatibility-faq channel.

Keep in mind that no support will be provided for the install process of Iris + DH shader compatibility v2.
You're expected to know how to install this.

  • Sky rendering breaks
    • Go to Distant Horizons settings
    • Change Advanced->Advanced Graphics Settings->Transparency to "Complete"
    • Change Advanced->Advanced Graphics Settings->Render Quality to "Medium"
    • Restart Minecraft

THIS IS FOR LEGACY SHADER COMPAT. THIS IS NOT FOR IRIS + DH SHADER COMPAT v2.
For Iris + DH shader compat v2, see the section under the heading v2 above.

Known issues

  • LODs don't have proper shading applied to them when using shaders, so at night the LODs may look too bright and not match MC's terrain
  • LODs don't have (correct) lighting
    • Can be improved by switching DH Settings->Advanced->Graphics Settings->General->LOD Shading to Old Lighting/Forced

Game displays an error when using Iris with the DH support selected (1.7.0-snapshot+mc1.20.4-5983468) with the Complementary fork.

Error says the pack doesn't support DH and then it blocks the LOD chunks from displaying.

Hello, is there a compatibility version for Oculus 1.18.2? DH works smoothly when disabling the shaders, but nothing is displayed with them

Hi @Hirune30, I don't think there is. You'd have to cherrypick the changes to the 1.18.2 branch yourself and make it work.

Hi @derram, you need to downgrade to release Iris (<=v1.6.17) to use any shaderpack with legacy DH support.

@Steveplays28 I'll try to send new pictures and see if that works but I've also started to experience a bug where all shadows on the ground from the shader gets "burned" into the camera. (Not actually burned but it stays there until i exit the world) (Also that might be one of the incompatibilities you mentioned before idk)

  • Complementary Fork doesn't work

With the Complementary fork, the tall grass and I guess all semi-transparent blocks let me see through them down to the skybox and even underground caves

Hi @NatoBoram, the Complementary fork is known to work, so that's most likely an issue with your setup/modpack.
And the leaves/transparency issues is a known issue.

Hi, @Steveplays28 is there a way to fix the ambient occlusion of the lods with shaders? (the shadow effect of distant blocks to make depth), i use complementary fork, the oculus forge fork of taqed for 1.19.2, and the distant horizons shadow fix. here i put screenshot comparison of the problem. Thanks :D

Hi @Baffero, not at the moment. Best you can do with release Iris is set DH LOD shading to Old Lighting.
Otherwise see the Iris Discord server for an in-dev version of Iris (v1.7.0) with DH support v2, and Emin's Patreon for an in-dev version of Complementary that's compatible with it, but be aware that no support will be provided for setting it up.

I will add that to the list once everything's released as stable.

i am now on 1.18.2, after load the world instantly looks like this, on 1.16.5 the LODs after 5 minutes breaks like this, but before they are beautiful giving some hope :(

@Lucasbigbox You need to use the fork of Complementary for blending. It also disables the border fog if DH Compat is enabled in the shaderpack's settings.

Hello @Steveplays28 wondering if there is a fix for this almost artifacting issue that happens frequently with BSL. Clean install with no modifications other than turning on BSL. Only happens when fps is allowed higher than 60. Thanks!

Hi, @Steveplays28. When I use DrDestens Shader, the LOD chunks turn white as shown in the image. Is there a possible fix on the client side?
So far, I have tried useing Old Lighting and disabling Ambience Occlusion with no change.
Here are the mods I'm using:

@Lenatus hi, you could try turning down the brightness of the LODs in DH's config.
If that doesn't help you'd have to modify the shaderpack.

Could you put the info that this is for legacy support on the README so it is the first thing people see when they visit your fork? We have been getting bug reports on the Complementary discord regarding your fork even though Emin already made a DH-compatible version with the new iris 1.7 system.

Yeah, once r5.2 releases I'll update it. I'll also revise the document layout to add a clear separation between legacy and v2 Iris + DH compat once Iris v1.7.0 is released as stable.

Wonderful results. I'm still getting some artifacting with your edit Rethink Voxels, and the clouds seem to be rendering in front of everything. But I also have a few other performance mods, so it's highly likely something else is borking things:

I've also ran into the transparency issues, but apparently that's par for the course. You can also see some of the artifacting here, in the skybox.

I didn't find anything about the clouds, so I'll post something here if I find anything.

Hi @Angelin01, the clouds being broken is just a limitation of the legacy Iris + DH compatibility. Same with the transparency issues.

@Steveplays28 trying to build your 1.19.2 oculus build for DH, i cloned it using git, got java 16 and used terminal to ./gradlew build, it said build succesful. i think i found the jars in build/libs folder but they are only 1.16.5?

Im trying to build a modpack for me and my friends on forge with oculus, embeddium and distant horizons. It keeps crashing so i came here. In the compatibility requirement it says: "Distant Horizons v2.0.2a or higher" i can't find any version higher than 2.0.1a... Am i missing something?

@Dinnerconsumer84 Hi, v2.0.2-a-dev or higher can be found on GitLab, in the jobs section (CI/CD pipeline), and this section is linked to in the Distant Horizons Discord server.
Currently the version has been bumped up to v2.1.0-rc1, and may be released soon if there are no more issues, see #announcements in the Distant Horizons Discord server.

@Enterprise12nx01 You should use one of the supported DH + Iris compat v2 shaders with the new version of Oculus to fix that, if the commit for v2 shader compat is available on 1.19.2.
That's an issue with the legacy/v1 version of DH + Iris shader compat.

If you want to improve performance further you'd have to dig into the code and write more optimisations haha

Other than that though, performance seems good. I usually push my render/simulation distance to 12 and barely maintain 50-80fps on a similar setup, with medium DH quality and balanced DH CPU load, on a huge modpack. Mentioning for refererence.
Good luck with further refining your modpack!

Im using the shaders linked, tried several, using the beta DH-2.0.4a and the custom oculus build for 1.19.2
none of these shaders work, only the V1 custom complementary shaders do, but the clouds dont work for fantasy style

@Enterprise12nx01 Hi, the Oculus build for 1.19.2 most likely isn't up to date with Iris v1.7.0, which is required for shader compat v2.

@iamberhamla Hi, seems like you're trying to use Bliss on Mac. Bliss currently doesn't compile on Mac with DH and Iris v1.7.0.
Not sure if any shaders work with DH + Iris v1.7.0 at all on Mac, you'll have to try and see.

@Teqed Hello, the updated version of oculus works fine with shaders, thanks. But there is an incompatibility when using your oculus build and iris flywheel compat, I wanted to know if there is any way to fix this?

I am looking for a fix to this as well. Not sure why Teqed's fork breaks the compat. Create mod + shaders is just unbearable without it.

Help, I have tried all supported shaders and it still doesn't work, in fact even without shaders, Distant Horizons doesn't work for me.
I use the following mods:

is there a way to use shaders with distant horizons on forge minecraft version 1.19.2? the 1.19.2 version of oculus doesn't support v2 shaders and I have had no luck getting any of the v1 shaders to shade the LODs with the 1.19.2 v1 oculus fork on the most recent version of distant horizons on curseforge, and all other versions fail to render any LODs with or without shaders.

Hey there, I'm really sorry to ask, I've been trying incredibly hard to figure this out. I've read many of your recent responses (dating back to this February) to figure out how to get the Complementary Reimagined shader working with DH (Forge 1.20.1, Oculus 1.7.0, DH 2.1.0, and CS 5.2.1).

I finally no longer see the message telling me that the shader pack is incompatible with DH, but the clouds disappear/reappear as I move my cursor. I also haven't observed DH actually working for me yet, but I thought that was a symptom of the shader issue. I've read that there's a fork being worked on several times from a few months ago, but is that still being done/exclusive to their patreon? No matter where I look I can't seem to find it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! The gf and I really like Complementary Reimagined's style and what DH adds to atmosphere so we didn't want to just change shaders if it could supplemented. Thank you in advance.

Hi @TheCrazedPixel, no worries on asking. The fork that has been mentioned in this thread is out of date (it's for the legacy/v1 shader compat).
Complementary r5.2.1 should work with Distant Horizons. I'd recommend troubleshooting in the Distant Horizons Discord server.

Hi @Meidde, that's a bug with Oculus/legacy shader compatibility.
You'd have to debug Oculus, as 1.16.5 is not supported anymore.

I downloaded the version that is in your post from Oculus, but if it is no longer supported, I imagine that one day it was already supported, could you perhaps help me look for a version of distant horizons and oculus that would work in Forge 1.16.5 ?

@Meidde Apologies, I misspoke, 1.16.5 was never officially supported by the Oculus nor Iris authors.
You could try asking the person that made the backport fork if they're able to update their fork or you could try making your own backport.

For those passing by, I'd appreciate upvotes on modrinth/knossos#1740, which is an issue that suggests adding a Distant Horizons filter for shaderpacks on Modrinth. Having a Distant Horizons filter on Modrinth would make this list easier to maintain.
