Install Xcode 4

The download/install takes a while so start it first. When it finishes downloading you will still need to run it to complete installation.

iTerm2

Really the nicest choice for a terminal on OSX right now, especially with Lion style full screen support.

Repair postgres (homebrew) after a system crash

When my mac crashes and Postgres doesn't boot properly I see the following errors in /usr/local/var/postgres/server.log

FATAL:  lock file "postmaster.pid" already exists

# and / or

lock file "/var/pgsql_socket/.s.PGSQL.5432.lock" already exists

PSQL

Magic words:

psql -U postgres

Some interesting flags (to see all, use -h or --help depending on your psql version):

  • -E: will describe the underlaying queries of the \ commands (cool for learning!)
  • -l: psql will list all databases and then exit (useful if the user you connect with doesn't has a default database, like at AWS RDS)
