Module 1 Week 1 Diagnostic

This exercise is intended to help you assess your progress with the concepts and techniques we've covered during the week.

For these questions, write a short snippet of code that meets the requirement. Fill in your answers on a second sheet of paper or in your notebook. In cases where the question mentions a "given" data value, use the variable given to refer to it (instead of re-writing the information).

This was an interesting article about the the progression of women in the tech industry, specifically the advancement of women at Harvey Mudd College. The increase in enrollment of women at the college was a result of many changes and programs introduced at the school to demystify and make things less "macho" so that the programs were more accessable to women. I think this is great. I have always been a proponent of hiring the best person for the job no matter that race, color or sex. I think this mentlity is gaining ground as we have seen tremendous increase in CS from women. I believe that we can overcome this barrier the same way we overcame the "wife stays in the kitchen" mentality. It will take an open mind and humility that I believe that the IT field is lacking right now.
To tell you the truth I am tired of hearing about the negatives about Donald Trump. I do not believe that technology is in any way in danger of slowing down. If anything it will be privatized like the space program now is. The need to connect and sharedata will never ever stop. This election has been blown way out of proportion. IT developers will dictate the course of technology, not the president. All this "fake" news garbage is just a distraction from what we need to be focusing on. Progress and performance in OUR country. I am optamistic about the future and I know I can do what I can to help benefit the feild of technology.
THe message that I am recieving when I read this is that we need to be more selective where we work. Here is this buy who left his journalism career to start a new adventure in tech/marketing and he is super excited to start working at HubSpot. He quickly realizes that things arent what they seem. This is a good lesson for us to learn as we should be looking for a place that fits our personality and needs. It was evident that on the surface, HubSpot was a great place to work but actually working there was no cup of tea. They would constantly dance on the ethical boundries of creative marketing trying to caputure the attention of its users and track what interests them so that they can better target the "next" email or promotion. How he was let go is not isolated to Startups. I have seen this happen to many mant people. This is just the compnay trying to protect its ass and make him out to be the bad guy. It's unfotunate but it is a reality we might all face one day. I think the lesson is to keep your integrit
* Have you had educational experiences that you felt were more focused on winning the system than learning? How did you adapt to that system?
-Yes, when I was in grade school it was very much just jump through the linear hoops and you pass. I was always bored in school because there were no interesting challenges to me. Engagement and content is very important for culturing a good learning enviornment.
* If you have a chance to teach programming at Turing or in the future, how would you create a culture focused on learning? What advice would you offer instructors at Turing to help create that focus for you here, beyond what you've already experienced?
-I think the article represents this well when he is talking about giving his students real working examples of programs and have my students manipulate or repair their functionality.
* Do you think there's more value to the idea of so-called "arbitrary" goals and discipline than the author suggests?

*Some Garbage I Used to Believe About Equality*
* What steps does Nightingale suggest someone take to educate themselves about inequality? Have you encountered this idea before? Does Nightingale’s suggestion feel radical to you? Why? Why does he suggest going to the lengths he does?
* Nightingale describes the temptation to “want to be able to have an intellectual conversation about [social issues and people’s experiences].” What damage can intellectual conversation at the wrong time have? When is the right time for intellectual conversation?
-I guess if the subject matter is risky because an event just happened. Take for example 911. It was difficult to talk about the events that happened, especially for the people involved. This same idea can be applied to intellectual conversations about challanging topics should be handled with a great deal of tact. It's right when it's handled in a responsible way with both sides having their own safe space to share their ideas and opinions.
* Nightingale identifies as a white male and targets his message particular
