Upgrade PostgreSQL 9.6.5 to 10.0 using Homebrew (macOS)
After automatically updating Postgres to 10.0 via Homebrew, the pg_ctl start command didn't work.
The error was "The data directory was initialized by PostgreSQL version 9.6, which is not compatible with this version 10.0."
Database files have to be updated before starting the server, here are the steps that had to be followed:
# need to have both 9.6.x and latest 10.0 installed, and keep 10.0 as default
brew unlink postgresql
brew install postgresql@9.6
brew unlink postgresql@9.6
brew link postgresql

A docker-compose config in v3 format for nginx-proxy with separate containers for nginx, dockergen and letsencrypt-companion. Additional example on how to get GitLab docker container running with this nginx-proxy setup. You need to create the docker network before, just run 'docker network create nginx-proxy'. Docker will tell you so if you don'…

What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining A Unicorn

What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining A Unicorn

Disclaimer: This piece is written anonymously. The names of a few particular companies are mentioned, but as common examples only.

This is a short write-up on things that I wish I'd known and considered before joining a private company (aka startup, aka unicorn in some cases). I'm not trying to make the case that you should never join a private company, but the power imbalance between founder and employee is extreme, and that potential candidates would

Create a Docker 1.12 Swarm cluster on AWS

This gist will drive you through creating a Docker 1.12 Swarm cluster (with Swarm mode) on AWS infrastructure.

Prerequisites

You need a few things already prepared in order to get started. You need at least Docker 1.12 set up. I was using the stable version of Docker for mac for preparing this guide.

$ docker --version
Docker version 1.12.0, build 8eab29e

You also need Docker machine installed.

Using iOS 15 devices with Xcode 12.5 (instead of Xcode 13)
# The trick is to link the DeviceSupport folder from the beta to the stable version.
# sudo needed if you run the Mac App Store version. Always download the dmg instead... you'll thank me later :)
# Support iOS 15 devices (Xcode 13.0) with Xcode 12.5:
sudo ln -s /Applications/Xcode-beta.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport/15.0 /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport
# Then restart Xcode and reconnect your devices. You will need to do that for every beta of future iOS versions
# (A similar approach works for older versions too, just change the version number after DeviceSupport)

Kill supervisor on Docker when any of the services fail

Killing supervisor if any of it's child processes fail

The trick is to only register the listener for events that indicate failure, namely

  • PROCESS_STATE_STOPPED
  • PROCESS_STATE_EXITED
  • PROCESS_STATE_FATAL

Once they do, we should send a SIGQUIT to Supervisor.

Virtual hosts

Let's say you want to host domains first.com and second.com.

Create folders for their files:
