What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining A Unicorn

This is a short write-up on things that I wish I'd known and considered before joining a private company (aka startup, aka unicorn in some cases). I'm not trying to make the case that you should never join a private company, but the power imbalance between founder and employee is extreme, and that potential candidates would

Locate the section for your github remote in the .git/config file. It looks like this:

[remote "origin"]
	fetch = +refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/origin/*
	url = git@github.com:joyent/node.git

Now add the line fetch = +refs/pull/*/head:refs/remotes/origin/pr/* to this section. Obviously, change the github url to match your project's URL. It ends up looking like this:

  • Tab indentation
  • Single-quotes
  • Semicolon
  • Strict mode
  • No trailing whitespace
  • Variables at the top of the scope
  • Multiple variable statements
  • Space after keywords and between arguments and operators
