Highlights

  1. World's fastest 8-GPU system -- 14% faster than 8x GTX Titan X OC!
  2. First system to break 330 GH/s on NTLM -- will easily break 350 GH/s with OC!
  3. First system to break 200 GH/s on MD5!
  4. Driver 367.18 is still half-baked garbage, so we still can't do any overclocking >:/
  5. GPU temperatures stable at < 73C in 23C ambient environment

@gamebak Scrypt is purposefully designed to be RAM-intensive. It's seen widespread use in response to increased proliferation of Bitcoin mining ASICs, which chew through SHA256 like hot butter. The idea behind it being that RAM is more expensive than compute cycles.

@gamebak I don't know of the technical details, but it is commonly known that AMD cards are way better at scrypt hashing. This has been true since years.

What are the parameters used to some of these? bcrypt, scrypt, PBKDF2-*, and probably others are all customizeable. It also seems fairly pointless to benchmark algorithms which are customizeable and have parameters that allow you to make them however fast you want. Also, for anything that's specific for key derivation or password storage, slower is better.

For some of these disk encryption / applications / password vaults, it would perhaps be useful to look at them and how they compare to each other to see which ones are the slowest. However, some of them may be customizeable (I know LastPass is) and some of them may adjust their hardness based upon the performance of the cpu you're testing on. I suspect that some of these do adjust their hardness, e.g., VeraCrypt PBKDF2-HMAC-Whirlpool + XTS 512 bit, because they're so very slow in your benchmark. Ideally, all of the applications here should do that.

These are all very weak - bcrypt's usually 10 or 11 (32-64x stronger), scrypt should be more like N=16384 r=8 (increases memory hardness from 128KiB to 16MiB), and PBKDF2's best used with hundreds of thousands of rounds. The VeraCrypt example you mention uses 500,000 rounds.

Shatatel GTX980 is already capable of UHD30 in real-time with NVENV (I've done it with ffmpeg), though the quality is inferior to CPU+x264/x265. Also, the consumer cards can only do 2 nvenc jobs at a time (artificial limitation).

Yes this is correct. These benchmark parameters always stay the same for historical reasons. Even in 2050 we'll still be using the same parameters.

I hope nobody would use NVENV on the 1080 when the more elegant and well equipped x265 transcode would give you 120 FPS at scale.

I'm interested in running multiple ffmpeg h.26x streams on a machine. Are you sugguesting just using CPU.

I understand the desire to keep bcrypt at work factor 5, but can you do additional tests with a factor of 10 and 15. Best to start the 15 now and have a history of how it progresses. And 10 is common today. Thanks!

@sroussey the work factor is log2, so you can simply divide the hashrate in half any number of times to get the hash rate for higher work factors. For example, 105700 H/s for cost 5... 105700 / 2^(10-5) =~ 3303 H/s for cost=10, 105700 / 2^(15-5) =~ 103 H/s for cost=15. No further benchmarking necessary ;) But the reason why we benchmark with static parameters like this is so we can easily compare device performance spanning several hardware generations.

@epixoip For scrypt though performance should scale non-linearly as the memory hardness goes up, right? Might it be a good idea to start benchmarking scrypt with various different work factors?

Obviously you won't have those benchmarks for older cards you already tested, but going forward I feel like that'd be interesting data to start tracking.

can someone please explain me how to convert (if this makes any sense) kh/s to classic key per second.
For example in this benchmark is said that this rig can perform 3177.6 kH/s for WPA/WPA2, in terms of key per second how much is it?
I would like to know how much does it take, with this settings, to crack a password (123.. + abc.. + ABD... = 62 of let say 10 digit => 62^10).

Warning, rough napkin math ahead:

Suppose cost per hash continues to improve at 55% year over year.
Suppose one was willing to spend $10 million on Sagitta cracking hardware.
Suppose we're cracking a 1Password user's cloudkeychain master password as encrypted today.

In 10 years 59 bits of entropy could be cracked in less than 3 months.
In 20 years 71 bits of entropy could be cracked in less than 3 months.

For reference a passphrase of 4 plain diceware words (7,776 word dictionary) is about 52 bits of entropy.
In 10 years 52 bits could be cracked in about 10 hours
In 20 years 52 bits could be cracked in about 13 seconds

Now imagine if you're a three letter agency and blew a $billion on hardware…

@emorikawa your napkin incorrectly assumes a performance curve like we have had over the last few years. GPUs have only improved so fast because CPUs hit the wall on Moore's law a few years back so the focus shifted to offloading work onto GPUs instead, and since "they" had "the process" down it was just a matter of Nvidia and AMD building the fabs and bringing the cards to market, who happily gobbled them up and made Bitcoins out of them. So they made tons more and production capacity improved much faster then I imagine they would have liked. Nvidia are currently on 14nm which is now in the no more Moore's territory i.e. expect about 15% every 2-3 years .

There may be some upside in terms of architecture, like AMD's HBM or multi GPU cards ( like the R295 X2) which might improve the rather bleak outlook, but in general it aint pretty. Yield (cost) obviously also doesn't improve and the thermal/power envelope remains the same.

ASICs obviously remain an option for those that can afford to build custom systems for specific tasks, but those that want your data have ways to get it that are much simpler than bruteforce. If you are doing something naughty they will find something to charge you with. They really don't need your pornhub password. :)

Locks are there to keep the honest people out.

The ubiquitous use of 2FA makes all of this moot.

According to the hashcat source code, PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 is configured with 1000 iterations by default (as per RFC from the year 2000) and benchmark.c does not set any special options.

PBKDF2 scales linearly (not tested, but in theory it should, unlike for example bcrypt) so if you are wondering what PBKDF2 parameters to use, consider that this cracking machine does 9.5 million PBKDF2 hashes per second and similar machines can be rented at a few dollars per hour. Adjust your configuration accordingly.

Example: with iterations set to a million, it can do about 9.5 thousand attempts instead of 9.5 million per second.

Better example: use argon2/scrypt/bcrypt (in that order of preference).

@lgommans Thanks for linking! It was hard to find where/how the benchmarking was being done though. I read through benchmark.c but didn't really see how it was calling on something like SHA-256. Hash speed for stuff like that is directly related to the length of the target we are mining and whether there is any intermediate state caching.

@mahyarmirrashed Gotta admit that I also don't see anymore how I arrived at those statements from the source code, also when I go back in history to see the file version from early December 2019 (I should have used permalinks). E.g. I don't see mode 10900 mentioned in the list in benchmark.c. Though, the benchmark we're replying to above is now from 2016, so the output from 2016 might not match the current source code, I don't know if it makes sense to try and read source code based on the benchmark above.

The latter part of my comment, about PBKDF2 scaling linearly unlike bcrypt (that typically uses a 2^N input), and that argon2 and scrypt and bcrypt are preferable over pbkdf2, is still correct though. They run much slower on GPUs because of memory requirements (even bcrypt, which has a fairly minimal memory requirement, but is therefore also weaker than argon2 and scrypt) which is good if you are defending passwords. It's not so good if you're the hacker :P
