Mod 3 Week 1: Professional Storytelling II: Resumes & Portfolios

Refine your career vision:

What are the values that will drive your job search?

Building a better life for my family, the potential of beginning generational wealth, helping to establish a black presence in tech, showing young black people there is another way, buying back Grandma's house.

What are your goals for your job search?

Differentiate myself from other junior developers. Get a feel for how I am perceived by different varieties of tech companies.

What kind of role do you see yourself pursuing in your job search?

Junior fullstack developer. I want to find a place with a programming wiz nearby.

Based on your latest version of your career vision, list the top 3-5 industries and companies you'll pursue in your job search as of right now. Why did you pick these industries/companies? How do they relate to the values and goals you have for yourself in your job search?

  1. Digitial Consultancy
  2. NonProfit/GovTech
  3. Art/Fashion
  4. Music
  5. Sports (football)

Build your resume

What will you emphasize in your resume that directly relates to your targeted industries?

I'm not exactly sure how to emphasize my race as a means to do work related to benefitting my race. Actually as I write this it kind of feels weird. I think the fact that I am the only black student in my cohort is interesting, but how will I showcase that other than in person.

Alloy Magnetic: Front End Dev Position

Dear (Megan Kilpatrick, CEO, in the event that I cannot find a hiring manager),

My adevnture in software development has been both the most taxing and rewarding adventure that I have ever been on. And I am excited by the prospect of continuing that adventure at Alloy Magnetic. There is an intersection between technology and service that has been calling my name for much of the last 4 years, and in November of 2019, I began the process of answering. I would love the chance to join your team as a Jr. Front-End Developer. My experience is in hospitality management, and I pride myself on how I treat others. There is something awesome about watching a person smile over a plate of fries, but I feel I was missing out on opportunities to directly and positively effect the lives of others.

My team mentality has been refined during my time at Turing School of Software Development. It is hard to start learning things you have little or no concept of, with people you don't know. Egos have to be sacrificed to a certain extent in order for everyone to grow. Teamwork has been essential to my personal success, and the success of every team I have been on. My team first mentality originated over years of two-a-days in August sun, and cultivated in the resturaunt industry. I learned to communicate with diverse and eclectic groups of individuals, empathize with their unique stories, and problem solve as a collective. I learned how to lead and how to follow, and that getting out of the way isn't my style.

I swear I felt like Harry Potter the first time I got an h1 to show up in the browser, and the joy I had watching a for loop increment in the console was pure and innocent and also made me feel like the smartest person ever. My goal is to take my newest passion of software development, combine it with my favorite skill as a team member, and use it to complete my life's calling, which is to make my community a better place.

I appreciate your reading this! `

Post the link to your cover letter here Review your cover letter with a peer some time this week. What feedback did your partner give you? What next steps will you take to make your cover letter even stronger?

If you were to apply to this position (and you should!), how will you customize your resume for it? What other next steps would you need to take here?

I will apply for this position. I am not exactly sure how I would update my resume, I could really use a resume session again.

Mod 3 Week 3: Outreach & Networking II

Back to your resume and cover letter you've been working on: What other next steps do you want to take to make these two components stronger? Outreach Brainstorming: Either explore the company you wrote a cover letter for or find a new company to explore this week; Go to their company LinkedIn page and start to explore the employees. Who are a couple people you could reach out to? Why? Finalize Your Plan: Who have you decided to reach out to? Why that person? How will you contact them? What do you want to talk to them about? How will you follow up? Execute your plan: Reach out to your contact THIS WEEK. If possible, reach out to more than one person OR find a meetup to attend also. What happened? What did you learn about the company? What other next steps should you take for pursuing this company? Be sure to update this in Huntr.

Mod 3 Week 4: Interview Prep

Prepare for Job Shadow: AEIOU

Activities: what questions do you have about the activities that a software developer does on a daily basis?

  1. how often do you interact with other developers or supervisors?

  2. how long do you take for lunch?

  3. how do you do code reviews?

Environment: what questions do you have about the overall environment and culture of this workplace?

  1. are there any black developers that you know? other underrepresented groups?

  2. do you feel like the company is empathetic with the lives of underrepresented groups?

  3. do you enjoy your job?

Interactions: what questions do you have about the team at this company? What do you hope to see in your interactions during the shadow?

Objects: what questions do you have about the code or the product?

  1. how many languages do you work with?

  2. how long are sprints?

Users: what questions do you have about how the company interacts with their users?

N/A

After the Job Shadow, reflect on the same questions; what are your takeaways from the shadow?

Activities: what was engaging to the person/people you shadowed?

My shadow was really interesting. She came from a job centered around helping less fortunate people, but she also felt she lost part of herself in her work.

Environment: what did you notice about how they talked about the culture and environment of this company?

She showed me more than she spoke about it. I got to sit in on the daily stand up. It looked a lot like what we do at Turing. just more organized/professional, and way more goal oriented.

Interactions: what did you notice about your interactions with this person/people?

She seemed very open to answering whatever questions I had and even suggested that I tell her when I get closer to graduation to see if they're hiring.

Objects: what did you learn about their approach to code and/or product development?

I got to see that❤️ they test their code twice, and that the code review process is significantly more involved than what we do (even tyhough we are taught and encouraged to be more thorough)

Users: what did you learn about their approach to their users?

N/A

What are your main takeaways from the shadow? How will you use this information to help you with your job search strategy?

I think given enough time people kind of gravitate to me which can be good and bad. Opportunities will arise, and I have to be prepared to make the best out of them. My strategy says I need to be as comfortable with the technical side of technical interviews as I am with the storytelling part.

Interview Prep:

Pick a successful project and write about it with the STAR method (What was the situation/scenario of the project? What was the task/target of the project? What action steps did you take? What were the results?):

S: My most recent project was a task! It was the group stretch project, where we elect a new technology to teach ourselves. We decided to learn some basic backend functionality. Rough.

T: We did a good job of defining the relationship as a group. We had a really good plan about how we would pair and divide and conquor. Unfortunately, I made a mistake downloading PostgreSQL. And things would grow tougher before they grew better.

A: I knew within the first couple hours of making the mistake it was one I was ill equipped to handle on my own. I reached out to my teachers and trouble shot with them, for what turned into days, and they couldn't help either. But by reaching out we found an instructor from another program to help and the issue got resolved. In between troubleshooting, I paired with my team on slack and tuple. Didn't miss any learning goals, and had fun trying something new.

R: Lesson learned is that backend software development isn't for the faint of heart.

Write about a time you failed and what you learned from that experience:

I had a performance I was really nervous about and I asked my DJ to play my vocal track behind my performance. For whatever reason that didn't happen and I froze over the instrumental track he played. Preperation is essential.

Write about how you've approached working with a team using a specific example:

I cannot count on my team as a parachute for my mistakes or shortcomings. Because there is enough of a chance they don't play a perfect game and we all look terrible together. Do my job everyday to the best of my abilities.

What other stories will you prepare to share?

I have carried so many drunk people out of bars...

Do some research into your top companies' tech stacks; what do you already know? What can you compare to your own learning? What do you need to learn more about?

Using this interview prep resource doc, pick out at least 3 resources you will use to prepare for interviews as well as 3 behavioral questions you could practice:

Mod 3 Week 5: Refining Your Strategy

Taking stock of where you are: what have you accomplished this module? What have you learned? Where are you stuck (have you not been able to follow through on outreach? Is your resume not finished?)?

I have accomplished one cover letter, and a below average resume. I have learned the importance fo being prepared at all levels for the jub hunt. Gotta hustle for opportunuties, gotta have a solid and well designed cover letter and resume, have to master my story and how it relates to my technical abilities.

Create plans for 3 different companies you want to target:

Questions to reflect on here: Why do you like this company? What makes you want to work there? Why are you a good fit for this company? What do you bring to the company? What transferable skills do you have? What do you already know about the company (product, team, culture, company size, location, etc.)? What do you need to learn?

  1. Alloy Magnetic

  2. Sumo Logic

Steps to take:

Outreach: look at the company’s LinkedIn page: who could you reach out to? What questions do you want to ask that person? Experience: once you've made a connection at the company, how could you find out more? Consider setting up a job shadow or exploring their tech stack in your projects Read back over the plan. How does it reflect your vision?

Imagine that you get the job. A year later, what have you gained from this experience? How have you started to fulfill your vision?

Plan #1:

Plan #2:

Plan #3:

Make it actionable: rank each plan on a scale of 1-5 for how much your plan aligns with the following: Available resources to help you pursue it: contacts, time, knowledge of the company, etc. Coherence: how it aligns with your career vision Confidence level: how feasible does this feel to you? How excited you are about it Now, pick the plan with the highest numbers across the board. What steps will you take next to pursue this strategy as you go into the next module?

Jeremiah, great job catching up with most of. earlier weeks. In reading your interview prep responses, I would suggest relating your answers to the team dynamics at turing in your project work. Lets brainstorm on what other professionals' experiences would be best. You missed our scheduled meeting on Friday. Lets plan on meeting soon. I would like to review a few items. Please add a mod 4 section.
