Bash `which` vs `type`

which vs type

  • which

    • finds executable in your $PATH
    • lives in /usr/bin/which
  • type

    • determines if command is alias, function, built-in command, cached executable (hashed), binary in $PATH, etc
  • shell builtin

We can make this file beautiful and searchable if this error is corrected: It looks like row 7 should actually have 28 columns, instead of 24. in line 6.
