Things I believe

Things I believe

This is a collection of the things I believe about software development. I have worked for years building backend and data processing systems, so read the below within that context.

Agree? Disagree? Feel free to let me know at @JanStette. See also my blog at www.janvsmachine.net.

Fundamentals

Keep it simple, stupid. You ain't gonna need it.

Append these aliases to your bashrc/zshrc and you will have access to commands which will allow you to install apk and launch apk
# I use ZSH, here is what I added to my .zshrc file (config file)
# at ~/.zshrc
# Have the adb accessible, by including it in the PATH
export PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/opt/X11/bin:path/to/android_sdk/platform-tools/"
# Setup your Android SDK path in ANDROID_HOME variable
export ANDROID_HOME=~/sdks/android_sdk
# Setup aapt tool so it accessible using a single command
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -e
main() {
previous_file="$1"
file_to_edit=`select_file $previous_file`
if [ -n "$file_to_edit" ] ; then
"$EDITOR" "$file_to_edit"
main "$file_to_edit"

A python script for extracting email addresses from text files.You can pass it multiple files. It prints the email addresses to stdout, one address per line.For ease of use, remove the .py extension and place it in your $PATH (e.g. /usr/local/bin/) to run it like a built-in command.

The program below can take one or more plain text files as input. It works with python2 and python3.

Let's say we have two files that may contain email addresses:

  1. file_a.txt
foo bar
ok ideler.dennis@gmail.com sup
 hey...user+123@example.com,wyd
hello world!

Checkout only certain branches with git-svn
If you want to clone an svn repository with git-svn but don't want it to push all the existing branches, here's what you should do.
* Clone with git-svn using the -T parameter to define your trunk path inside the svnrepo, at the same time instructing it to clone only the trunk:
git svn clone -T trunk http://example.com/PROJECT
* If instead of cloning trunk you just want to clone a certain branch, do the same thing but change the path given to -T:
git svn clone -T branches/somefeature http://example.com/PROJECT
