NetworkManager bridged network for KVM guests

Setting up a bridged network for KVM guests

This will work with either networkd or NetworkManager as a resolver. In fact, this is the only way to do bridged KVM (libvirtd) networking with NetworkManager.

If you're using NetworkManager (on a desktop or laptop, for example) on your KVM host, follow these instructions to set up a bridge interface.

Once you have the host bridge set up, proceed as follows:

  1. Create a bridge network device inside KVM. Edit and save the below text as file host-bridge.xml:

Enable persistent storage for the systemd journal log

Enable persistent storage for the systemd journal log

Overview

The assumed default setting in /etc/systemd/journald.conf is Storage=auto which implies that systemd journaling will only persist the journal if the expected storage location is available. Otherwise, the journal data is stored in memory and lost between reboots. On Ubuntu 16.04, /var/log/journal does not exist by default. Create it to keep and query events from previous boots.

Considerations:

  • Syslog still provides the persistant log records for Ubuntu 16.04, so enabling persistant systemd journal logging does cause a level of duplicaiton.
  • There are sane defaults:

Steps to make Flashlight work on 10.10.4 (doesn't work for El Capitan)

Make Flashlight work on 10.10.4

  1. Install SIMBL http://culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php
  2. Copy SpotlightSIMBL.bundle to /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/ (a)
  3. Copy Flashlight.osax to ~/Library/ScriptingAdditions/ (b)
  4. Disable Flashlight
  5. Enable Flashlight
  6. Open Script Editor on your Mac (look for "Script Editor In Spotlight") and paste the following code (don't change Snow Leopard for Yosemite)
tell application "Spotlight" to inject SIMBL into Snow Leopard

Dagger 2 injection with inheritance
/**
* This class allows to inject into objects through a base class,
* so we don't have to repeat injection code everywhere.
*
* The performance drawback is about 0.013 ms per injection on a very slow device,
* which is negligible in most cases.

There are three easy to make mistakes in go. I present them here in the way they are often found in the wild, not in the way that is easiest to understand.

All three of these mistakes have been made in Kubernetes code, getting past code review at least once each that I know of.

  1. Loop variables are scoped outside the loop.

What do these lines do? Make predictions and then scroll down.

func print(pi *int) { fmt.Println(*pi) }
