Rails 6 + ActionCable + Stimulus example for pushing updates to the view.

Rails 6 + ActionCable + Stimulus example for pushing updates to the view.

This example will show how to push updates to the view for a Model instance that has changed without the user having to refresh the page.

This example focuses more on getting ActionCable working with Stimulus. If you don't already have stimulus setup in your app, here's a great write up on how to set it up: https://medium.com/better-programming/how-to-add-stimulus-js-to-a-rails-6-application-4201837785f9

Example scenario

  • You have a Scan model with attributes.
  • You have a ScanController#show action.
  • A user is viewing a Scan through the show.html.slim|haml|erb view template.

I simply copied and pasted it from another location and saved it as a personal note, before it gained popularity on news.ycombinator.com. Serving ES6 to modern browsers

Background

Recently I noticed that Safari 10 for Mac/iOS had achieved 100% support for ES6. With that in mind, I began to look at the browser landscape and see how thorough the support in the other browsers. Also, how does that compare to Babel and its core-js runtime. According to an ES6 compatability table, Chrome, Firefox, and IE Edge have all surpassed what the Babel transpiler can generate in conjunction with runtime polyfills. The Babel/core-js combination achieves 71% support for ES6, which is quite a bit lower than the latest browsers provide.

It made me ask the question, "Do we need to run the babel es2015 preset anymore?", at least if our target audience is using Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.

It's clear that, for now, we can't create a site or application that only serves ES6. That will exclude users of Internet Explorer and various older browsers running on older iOS and Android devices. For example, Safari on iOS 9 has pretty mediocre ES6 support.

Here's how to make jQuery DataTables work with npm and webpack. DT checks for AMD compatibility first
which breaks when you're using CommonJS with webpack.
Install DT core: npm install datatables.net
Install a DT style: npm install datatables.net-bs (bootstrap)
Install the imports-loader webpack plugin: https://github.com/webpack/imports-loader#disable-amd
Create a loader "exception" just for DT in webpack.config.js:
module: {
loaders: [

Nginx & PHP-FPM systemd services

A basic set of systemd units for starting Nginx and PHP-FPM daemons on system startup.

  • Ensures Nginx web server has started before the PHP-FPM process.
  • Nginx pid file placed at /run/nginx.pid.
  • PHP-FPM pid file placed at /run/php7/php-fpm.pid, PHP7 PHP-FPM config at /etc/php7.
  • Based on usage with Ubuntu 16.04LTS / 18.04LTS.

Unit files are placed in /etc/systemd/system and enabled with:

nginx rails send_file madness

Goal: Have some static content, served by Nginx, but it requires an authenticated user. User auth is through Rails.

Project structure: The actual static files are in /home/vagrant/docs/ The browser will use the URL /help/* to access this content

The Ruby bits: RAILS_ENV=production rails server is used to start a WEBrick on port 3000.

Ruby memory analysis over time

Finding a Ruby memory leak using a time analysis

When developing a program in Ruby, you may sometimes encounter a memory leak. For a while now, Ruby has a facility to gather information about what objects are laying around: ObjectSpace.

There are several approaches one can take to debug a leak. This discusses a time-based approach, where a full memory dump is generated every, say, 5 minutes, during a time that the memory leak is showing up. Afterwards, one can look at all the objects, and find out which ones are staying around, causing the
