So, You Want to be a Systems Engineer

Systems Engineering (also known as Infrastructure Engineering, Operations Engineering, or DevOps) is a challenging but rewarding career path. Because Systems Engineering draws from a wide variety of smaller topics, it can be hard to know where to start and in what order to begin. This resource is intended to give you a sketch of some of the learning-paths that that can lead you to a career in Systems Engineering.

What do I need to know?

To start, let's examine a high-level list of topics that established systems engineers should have knowledge of. In each of these topics, the level of depth required to get started as a systems engineer may vary, but it's good to have a general breadth of knowledge on all of these topics.

These lists are not exhaustive, rather a good starting point to gain general knowledge.

Linux Networking Reading List

Linux Networking Reading List

Currently in no particular order. Most of these are kind of ancient.

Where's all the modern documentation? So much of what I've turned up searching is other folks complaining about having few options beyond reading source code.

The OREILLY books, while dated, seem to be some of the best available. Note that these can be read with a 7-day trial. Do this! At least get through the introduction section and first chapter of each to see if it's what you're after.

Linux Virtual Networking

Virtual Networking on Linux

In the Linux Kernel, support for networking hardware and the methods to interact with these devices is standardized by the socket API:

Functional Programming in Python - Resources

These are some resources, sorted pedagogically, to get started with functional programming in Python:

  1. Functional Programming in Python by Dan Bader (videos): Nice low level introduction to map, filter and reduce functions. It shows also how easy it is to parallelise code in functional programming.
  2. Learning Data Science using Functional Python by Joel Grus (video): Nice talk on how to translate imperative code into functional code using Python. The title is misleading as data science is not the focus of the talk.
  3. Functional Programming in Python by David Mertz (short book): Nice and short book that explains the basic concepts of functional programming in Python using examples.
  4. Functional Programming HOWTO by A. M. Kuchling (tutorial): Overview of Fu

examples of SNAT, DNAT with iptables for Advantech, Conel routers, with comments (probably will work on other routers where iptables can be manipulated, care needs to be taken on applying these commands after reboot).

Some examples of SNAT, DNAT with iptables with comments

mainly used in start-up script

How to test 'safely'

When we play with iptables aka firewall we might end up in situation, where we execute rule, which has unforseen impact - lock yourself out. Recovering from this situation is necessity.

How to:

  • Enable reboot via SMS.
  • Test all commands in shell first before putting them into Start-up script. This way the command will be wiped out, when unit is rebooted.

masquarade all outgoing packets to be WLAN0 IP

How to setup your own CA with OpenSSL

For educational reasons I've decided to create my own CA. Here is what I learned.

First things first

Lets get some context first.
