Debian 13

Caution Upgrading from Debian 12 to Debian 13 on machines with mdadm has intermittently failed for me; symptom is that grub EFI is not up to date and system boots into BIOS. Root cause under investigation; it might not be related to mdadm.

To start, read the official release notes.

If your install fits into "vanilla Debian plus maybe a handful of 3rd-party repos", then this guide for a simple upgrade to Debian 13 "trixie" from Debian 12 "bookworm" can be helpful. 3rd-party repos are handled with a find command.

Note upgrade is only supported from Debian 12 to Debian 13. If you are on Debian 11, upgrade to Debian 12 first. Then once on Debian 12, you can upgrade to Debian 13.

HP Smart Storage Admin CLI (ssacli) installation and usage on Proxmox PVE (6.x)

Why use HP Smart Storage Admin CLI?

You can use ssacli (smart storage administrator command line interface) tool to manage any of supported HP Smart Array Controllers in your Proxmox host without need to reboot your server to access Smart Storage Administrator in BIOS. That means no host downtime when managing your storage.

CLI is not as convenient as GUI interface provided by BIOS or desktop utilities, but still allows you to fully manage your controller, physical disks and logical drives on the fly with no Proxmox host downtime.

ssacli replaces older hpssacli, but shares the same syntax and adds support for newer servers and controllers.

In this post, we will cover the new feature flags subsystem, which is part of the upcoming RabbitMQ 3.8.0. Feature flags will allow a rolling cluster upgrade to the next minor version, without requiring all nodes to be stopped before upgrading.

Upgrading from RabbitMQ 3.6.x to 3.7.x

It you had to upgrade a cluster from RabbitMQ 3.6.x to 3.7.x, you probably had to use one of the following solutions:

• Deploy a new cluster alongside the existing one (a.k.a. blue-green deploy), then migrate data & clients to the new cluster
• Stop all nodes in the existing cluster, upgrade the last node that was stopped first, then continue upgrading all other nodes, one-by-one

The above solutions were painful because the steps involved were complex. The new feature flags subsystem is meant to reduce this pain to the minimum.

Intro

This is an example configuration to have nginx output JSON logs to make it easier for Logstash processing. I was trying to get nginx > Filebeat > Logstash > ES working and it wasn't until I connected Filebeat directly to Elasticsearch that I saw the expected data. Google led me to ingest-convert.sh and I realized filebeat setup works for Filebeat > ES but not Filebeat > Logstash > ES. This is because Logstash does not use ingest pipelines by default. You have to enable them in the elasticsearch output block.

Having nginx log JSON in the format required for Elasticsearch means there's very little processing (i.e. grok) to be done in Logstash. nginx can only output JSON for access logs; the error_log format cannot be changed.

Extra fields are output and not used by the Kibana dashboards. I included them in case they might be useful. Since they are not declared in the filebeat setup, their default is "string" when yo
