System Design Cheatsheet

Picking the right architecture = Picking the right battles + Managing trade-offs

Basic Steps

  1. Clarify and agree on the scope of the system
  • User cases (description of sequences of events that, taken together, lead to a system doing something useful)
    • Who is going to use it?
    • How are they going to use it?

Example loading multiple JPEG files with TensorFlow and make them available as Tensors with the shape [[R, G, B], ... ].
# Typical setup to include TensorFlow.
import tensorflow as tf
# Make a queue of file names including all the JPEG images files in the relative
# image directory.
filename_queue = tf.train.string_input_producer(
tf.train.match_filenames_once("./images/*.jpg"))
# Read an entire image file which is required since they're JPEGs, if the images
# are too large they could be split in advance to smaller files or use the Fixed

Installing TensorFlow on EC2
# Note – this is not a bash script (some of the steps require reboot)
# I named it .sh just so Github does correct syntax highlighting.
#
# This is also available as an AMI in us-east-1 (virginia): ami-cf5028a5
#
# The CUDA part is mostly based on this excellent blog post:
# http://tleyden.github.io/blog/2014/10/25/cuda-6-dot-5-on-aws-gpu-instance-running-ubuntu-14-dot-04/
# Install various packages
sudo apt-get update

Moved

Now located at https://github.com/JeffPaine/beautiful_idiomatic_python.

Why it was moved

Github gists don't support Pull Requests or any notifications, which made it impossible for me to maintain this (surprisingly popular) gist with fixes, respond to comments and so on. In the interest of maintaining the quality of this resource for others, I've moved it to a proper repo. Cheers!
