Eshell

eshell is the shell I’ve tried using over time, and in the end just never stick with it. Let’s try one more time with a couple of tricks. The first tricks are mostly documentation:

  • M-& in a tramp-aware session means you run commands in a new buffer, without a TTY. Great for things like tailf.
  • for ncurses-like applications, “visual commands” is the missing context. Applications like top are in the default list by default,

A bit of background on compilers exploiting signed overflow
Why do compilers even bother with exploiting undefinedness signed overflow? And what are those
mysterious cases where it helps?
A lot of people (myself included) are against transforms that aggressively exploit undefined behavior, but
I think it's useful to know what compiler writers are accomplishing by this.
TL;DR: C doesn't work very well if int!=register width, but (for backwards compat) int is 32-bit on all
major 64-bit targets, and this causes quite hairy problems for code generation and optimization in some
fairly common cases. The signed overflow UB exploitation is an attempt to work around this.

Covering more with unit tests

Unit tests are quick to run, quick to write in bulk, target a small area of code, are not prone to timing issues and other intermittent failures and have excellent reporting tools.

However, actual usage is often prevented by side effects which require resources such as processes, ports and ets tables to exist or will crash the test.

Separating code into pure and impure functions can help and is typically beneficial. It can also harm readability, and even then not enable full coverage using unit testing. For example:

receive_message(Msg) ->

using rebar to create an erlang app with a dependency, and then starting a release created with reltool

Summary

I'm trying to figure out how to use rebar to:

  • create erlang project
  • add a dependency on an erlang module from github
  • start the app via the erl console
  • create a release and start the app from the release (via the generated scripts)
