WARNING SIGNS OF A DANGEROUS CULT ... as applied to Audrey's open source community side projects
Earlier this weekend, I realized that I may have become part of a dangerous
cult after having the following conversation at the foodcarts:
> Me: "We don't know those people. Should we indoctrinate them?"
> Audrey: "Yes! I have more fliers."

MySQL server has gone away fix
# If your workers are inactive for a long period of time, they'll lose

# This hack ensures we re-connect whenever a connection is

Checkout github pull requests locally

Locate the section for your github remote in the .git/config file. It looks like this:

[remote "origin"]
	fetch = +refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/origin/*
	url = git@github.com:joyent/node.git

Now add the line fetch = +refs/pull/*/head:refs/remotes/origin/pr/* to this section. Obviously, change the github url to match your project's URL. It ends up looking like this:

# Merge branch (master by default) to deployment branch, and deploy to server.
#
# Prerequisite:
#
# * Declare all deployment branches in `ALL_DEPLOYMENT_BRANCHES`
# * Declare deploy only branches in `DEPLOY_ONLY_BRANCHES` (ie, does not merge master)
# * Modify `Deploy.command` function as necessary

Big list of http static server one-liners

Each of these commands will run an ad hoc http static server in your current (or specified) directory, available at http://localhost:8000. Use this power wisely.

Discussion on reddit.

Woody Guthrie, on intellectual property.

This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright # 154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don’t give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that’s all we wanted to do.

*nix has pipes, Elixir has pipes, Ruby deserves pipes.
# Elixir has pipes `|>`. Let's try to implement those in Ruby.

# I want to write this:

[TIx 8] Weighted Random Sampling in Ruby

One of the many reasons I love working with Ruby is it has a rich vocabulary that allows you to accomplish your goals with a minimal amount of code. If there isn't a method that does exactly what you want, it's usually possible to build an elegant solution yourself.

Let's take the example of simulating the rolling of a die.

We can represent a die as an array of its faces.

die = [*?⚀..?⚅]
# => ["⚀", "⚁", "⚂", "⚃", "⚄", "⚅"]
