Zig in 30 minutes

A half-hour to learn Zig

This is inspired by https://fasterthanli.me/blog/2020/a-half-hour-to-learn-rust/

Basics

the command zig run my_code.zig will compile and immediately run your Zig program. Each of these cells contains a zig program that you can try to run (some of them contain compile-time errors that you can comment out to play with)

Get pbcopy and pbpaste in Arch Linux

Get pbcopy and pbpaste in Arch Linux

First you need the 'xsel' package.

$> pacman -S xsel

Then create aliases.

alias pbcopy='xsel --clipboard --input'

alias pbpaste='xsel --clipboard --output'

Linting your code, the vanilla way

Linting your code, the vanilla way

You may want a linter plugin to lint your code in Vim but you probably don't need it. At least try the built-in way before jumping on the plugin bandwagon.

Defining makeprg

autocmd FileType <filetype> setlocal makeprg=<external command>

This autocommand tells Vim to use <external command> when invoking :make % in a <filetype> buffer. You can add as many similar lines as needed for other languages.

Editing Files Remotely via SSH on SublimeText 3

Editing Files Remotely via SSH on SublimeText 3

Sometimes you need to edit a file on a remote server, but using vim/emacs is not very practical, due to lag and speed of screen refresh.

TextMate users have the classic rmate, but it was implemented in Ruby, which may not be available on the remote server.

A better option is to use this version of rmate, implemented in pure Bash. It's a single file, self-contained, and with no external dependencies.

Step by step:

A set of instructions on how to fix the harfbuzz + Infinality issue and restoring good-looking, Infinality-like font rendering.

Disclaimer: Please follow this guide being aware of the fact that I'm not an expert regarding the things outlined below, however I made my best attempt. A few people in IRC confirmed it worked for them and the results looked acceptable.

Attention: After following all the steps run gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache as root, this prevents various gdk-related bugs that have been reported in the last few hours. Symptoms are varied, and for Cinnamon the DE fails to start entirely while for XFCE the icon theme seemingly can't be changed anymore etc.

Check the gist's comments for any further tips and instructions, especially if you are running into problems!

Anatomy of a JavaScript/Node project.

Directory structure for JavaScript/Node Projects

While the following structure is not an absolute requirement or enforced by the tools, it is a recommendation based on what the JavaScript and in particular Node community at large have been following by convention.

Beyond a suggested structure, no tooling recommendations, or sub-module structure is outlined here.

Directories

  • lib/ is intended for code that can run as-is
  • src/ is intended for code that needs to be manipulated before it can be used

JavaScript: sort object properties by value (numeric or string)

Sort object properties by value (values are text)

I have following object:

var cities={10:'Tashkent', 14:'Karakalpakiya', 16:'Andijan'};

I want sort it by city names, so after sort it should be:

var cities={16:'Andijan', 14:'Karakalpakiya', 10:'Tashkent'};

But I can't sort object properties, instead can convert object into array, then sort items.
