~$ whois 59.43.138.70
route: 59.43.0.0/16
descr: Chinatelecom Next Carrying Network backbone
origin: AS4809

Instructions for installing and configuring Squid caching proxy server on Asuswrt-Merlin

Setup Entware on Asuswrt-merlin

Entware is a modern alternative to Optware.

For those unfamiliar with Optware: it's a software repository that offers various software programs that can be installed on your router. They allow you to add new functionality to your router (provided you have the know-how to properly configure them).

Entware system library is specially modified (patched) so that standard linux files that are normally located in /etc directory are now located in /opt/etc/ directory. To simplify things let's consider /etc/passwd file. On Asuswrt-merlin it normally looks something like:

admin:x:0:0:admin:/root:/bin/sh

nas:x:100:100:nas:/dev/null:/dev/null

Setup Android SDK on OSX with and without the android studio

Hi, I am a fork from https://gist.github.com/patrickhammond/4ddbe49a67e5eb1b9c03.

A high level overview for what I need to do to get most of an Android environment setup and maintained on OSX higher Catalina and Big Sur with and without Android Studio been installed.

Considering the SDK is installed under /Users/<your_user>/Library/Android/sdk folder which is the Android Studio preferred SDK location, but it works fine under /usr/local/share/android-sdk as well, which is a location pretty much used on CI mostly.

A step by step tutorial on how to automatically start ssh server on boot on the Windows Subsystem for Linux

How to automatically start ssh server on boot on Windows Subsystem for Linux

Microsoft partnered with Canonical to create Bash on Ubuntu on Windows, running through a technology called the Windows Subsystem for Linux. Below are instructions on how to set up the ssh server to run automatically at boot.

  1. Edit the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file by running the command sudo vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config and do the following
    1. Change Port to 2222 (or any other port above 1000)
    2. Change PasswordAuthentication to yes. This can be changed back to no if ssh keys are setup.
  2. Restart the ssh server:
    • sudo service ssh --full-restart
  3. With this setup, the ssh server must be turned on every time you run Bash on Ubuntu on Windows, as by default it is off. Use this command to turn it on:

How to passthrough SATA drives directly on VMWare ESXI 6.5 as RDMs

How to passthrough SATA drives directly on VMWare EXSI 6.5 as RDMs

There aren't many tutorials about this, the only tutorials I've found were about passing through entire PCIe cards to VMs, or refered to old ESXI versions (below 6.5) that used a more comprehensive desktop client instead of the web app. In v6.5, the web app was introduced and the desktop client was deprecated. You used to be able to setup RDMs in the desktop client, but with the introduction of the web console, this is no longer the case. This tutorial shows you how to pass SATA HDDs to the virtual machine on VMWare ESXI 6.5. This tutorial is partially based on VMWare's own KB and the now deprecated Forza IT blog post.

A word about VMWare ESXI 6.7

There is now an option while editing your VM's settings to add a New raw disk when you click `Add ha

Setting up a secure VPN with strongSwan on debian

With heightening concern regarding the state of internet privacy (fuelled in part by the passing of the Investigatory Powers Act in the UK), I have set up a VPN server on the virtual server I have hosted with Mythic Beasts. This uses strongSwan and certificate-based IKEv2 authentication.

Assumptions:

  • Debian Jessie server already set up and accessible via debian.example.com, a public IPv4 of 203.0.113.1 and a public IPv6 of 2001:db8::1
  • Client username of me
  • Clients are running the latest versions of macOS and iOS (Sierra and 10 respectively at the time of writing)
  • No need to support any other operating systems (although the setup is easily translated)

For automated deployment of a similar setup, albeit Ubuntu-based and using ansible for deployment, I recommend you take a look at Algo VPN. I used that project as a basis for my configuration.

Mac Network Commands Cheat Sheet

Disclaimer: I'm not the original author of this sheet, but can't recall where I found it. If you know the author, please let me know so I give the attribution.

The original author seems to be Charles Edge, here's the original content, as pointed out by @percisely.

Note: Since this seems to be helpful to some people, I formatted it to improve readability of the original. Also, note that this is from 2016, many things may have changed, and I don't use macOS anymore, so I probably can't help in case of questions, but maybe someone else can.

Mac Network Commands Cheat Sheet

After writing up the presentation for MacSysAdmin in Sweden, I decided to go ahead and throw these into a quick cheat sheet for anyone who’d like to have them all in one place. Good luck out there, and s
