Initializing MongoDB collections from JSON files using Node.js and Mongoose

Initializing MongoDB collections from JSON files using Node.js and Mongoose

I recently began working with Node and MongoDB for a small personal project, largely just to learn the technologies. One thing that is fairly simple but that I found far from obvious and lacking in concrete examples was how to populate the part of my database that used referenced collections from the sample JSON data I was starting with. This post attempts to fill that gap using the following code snippets, which are heavily commented inline. You will notice I am using the awesome Mongoose library which makes working with MongoDB very easy.

http.createServer( app ).listen( app.get( 'port' ), function() {

    mongoose.connect( 'mongodb://localhost/{YOUR_DB_NAME}' );

	var db = mongoose.connection;

postgres cheatsheet

Postgres Cheatsheet

This is a collection of the most common commands I run while administering Postgres databases. The variables shown between the open and closed tags, "<" and ">", should be replaced with a name you choose. Postgres has multiple shortcut functions, starting with a forward slash, "". Any SQL command that is not a shortcut, must end with a semicolon, ";". You can use the keyboard UP and DOWN keys to scroll the history of previous commands you've run.

Setup

installation, Ubuntu

Add Indent / Outdent Functionality to Google Spreadsheets

This tutorial demonstrates how to add an "Indent Text" menu item to a Google spreadsheet so you can indent/outdent text.

  • When the "Indent Text" menu item is selected, any cells within a single column selection will be indented by 5 spaces.

  • You can increase or decrease the number of spaces the text is indented by changing the line below so that the "5" is changed to a larger or smaller number (depending on your preference):

newValues.push(['=CONCAT(REPT( CHAR( 160 ), 5),"' + values[i][0] + '")']);

JSON <--> YAML conversion scripts

JSON <--> YAML conversion scripts

JSON is very standard. YAML, a superset of JSON, is very readable. Got something that needs JSON, and want to write the input in YAML? Use yaml2json. Have JSON and want to view it in a more readable format? Use json2yaml.

Use with files or stdin/stdout. Pretty-print the JSON if you want.

Requires pyyaml (via pip or easy_install), aka the python-yaml Ubuntu package.

A version of these files is available at tinyurl/json2yaml and tinyurl.com/yaml2json for you to wget or curl -L

PostgreSQL command line cheatsheet

PSQL

Magic words:

psql -U postgres

Some interesting flags (to see all, use -h or --help depending on your psql version):

  • -E: will describe the underlaying queries of the \ commands (cool for learning!)
  • -l: psql will list all databases and then exit (useful if the user you connect with doesn't has a default database, like at AWS RDS)
