Local Postgres

This gist is an example of how you can simply install and run and extended Postgres using docker-compose. It assumes that you have docker and docker-compose installed and running on your workstation.

Install

  • Requires docker and docker-compose
  • Clone via http: git clone https://gist.github.com/b0b7e06943bd389560184d948bdc2d5b.git

Setting up your python development environment (with pyenv, virtualenv, and virtualenvwrapper)

Overview of Python Virtual Environments

This guide is targetted at intermediate or expert users who want low-level control over their Python environments.

When you're working on multiple coding projects, you might want a couple different version of Python and/or modules installed. This helps keep each workflow in its own sandbox instead of trying to juggle multiple projects (each with different dependencies) on your system's version of Python. The guide here covers one way to handle multiple Python versions and Python environments on your own (i.e., without a package manager like conda). See the Using the workflow section to view the end result.

Firefox 57+ Addon Compatibility / Replacements

Mozilla is doing it again: detering the addon developers who once made it „big“ (last time was when they forced them from XUL to their new „stable API“ for „long-time compatibility“ – which then proved to change as often as the XUL did before). So again, many of them are „jumping boat“, as they a) have no time to migrate to the new WebExtensions, b) WebExtensions don't offer the APIs required to perform the tasks needed by their addon, c) WebExtensions not even being ready yet (with just a couple of weeks left to the deadline, the API is still changing and far from being completed).

I won't start a rant on „if I wanted a browser that looks like Chrome (Aurora with FF29), behaves like Chrome (only signed addons via a central store), and now feels like Chrome, I'd use Chrome“. Of course that's true, and having to re-configure ~80% of the browser of course lets me consider changing to a different browser (certainly not Chrome, though). But first let's look where we stand (comments, additions and suggestions wel

Using ripgrep in Emacs using helm-ag (Spacemacs)

Why

Ripgrep is a fast search tool like grep. It's mostly a drop-in replacement for ag, also know as the Silver Searcher.

helm-ag is a fantastic package for Emacs that allows you to display search results in a buffer. You can also jump to locations of matches. Despite the name, helm-ag works with ripgrep (rg) as well as with ag.

How

Problem

Ultimate FreeNAS 11.3 iocage Setup

TrueNAS

I will be moving from FreeNAS jails to ubuntu with docker, docker compose, and portainer. FreeNAS support and updates are lacking. There are many advantages to making the switch and with ZFS on linux I think FreeNAS may be a thing of the past. Stay tuned for a new guide of my latest setup. Check out my other gists for progress on the switch. https://gist.github.com/mow4cash/626275e095f7f90898944a85d66b3be6
