2015-01-29 Unofficial Relay FAQ

Compilation of questions and answers about Relay from React.js Conf.

Disclaimer: I work on Relay at Facebook. Relay is a complex system on which we're iterating aggressively. I'll do my best here to provide accurate, useful answers, but the details are subject to change. I may also be wrong. Feedback and additional questions are welcome.

What is Relay?

Relay is a new framework from Facebook that provides data-fetching functionality for React applications. It was announced at React.js Conf (January 2015).

Thoughts on Animation

Interesting part (unmounting & API) is at the end if you're not interested in the rest =).

Stress Tests

This animation proposal is just an attempt. In case it doesn't work out, I've gathered a few examples that can test the power of a future animation system.

  1. Parent is an infinitely spinning ball, and has a child ball that is also spinning. Clicking on the parent causes child to reverse spinning direction. This tests the ability of the animation system to compose animation, not in the sense of applying multiple interpolations to one or more variables passed onto the child (this should be trivial), but in the sense that the parent's constantly updating at the same time as the child, and has to ensure that it passes the animation commands correctly to it. This also tests that we can still intercept these animations (the clicking) and immediately change their configuration instead of queueing them.

  2. Typing letters and let them fly in concurrently. This tests concurrency, coordination of an array of ch

Folder Structure

Please note

While this gist has been shared and followed for years, I regret not giving more background. It was originally a gist for the engineering org I was in, not a "general suggestion" for any React app.

Typically I avoid folders altogether. Heck, I even avoid new files. If I can build an app with one 2000 line file I will. New files and folders are a pain.

React.js Conf Contest

React.js Conf tickets, everyone wants them but we only have space for 400 people, and that includes speakers, organizers and everyone’s proud parents and grandparents! If you are into speaking and have time before December 13th, you should submit a 30 minute talk or 5 minute lightning talk proposal. If you’re more into writing than speaking or coding, ReactJSNews is giving away 1 ticket for the best blog post submission. But you probably like programming, so React Native Newsletter & Exponent are giving away two tickets for the best React Native apps made with Exponent! Of course, if you like speaking, writing and programming you should do all of the above.

Details of the contest

  • You make an “app” and publish it to Exponent. You don’t have to open source it, but people

My exponent's ex-navigation docs/thoughts

Exponent - ex-navigation

This is for now, for my personal use only, things might not be correctly explained here. For the official docs please check: https://github.com/exponentjs/ex-navigation/blob/master/README.md

Navigation bar configuration

On every screen you can use the built-in navigation bar, you can add a title, left button, right button or change navigation bar’s style. All you need to do is pass appropriate params to navigationBar in the route configuration:

import React, { Component } from 'react';

Hi Zach :D

Modals are funny beasts, usually they are a design cop-out, but that's okay, designers have to make trade-offs too, give 'em a break.

First things first, I'm not sure there is such thing as a "simple" modal that is production ready. Certainly there have been times in my career I tossed out other people's "overly complex solutions" because I simply didn't understand the scope of the problem, and I have always loved it when people who have a branch of experience that I don't take the time

Let's not forget about jQuery

In this talk I'd like to use 5 minutes of my time to explain to the audience why jQuery is simply way better than React.

  • Does React have a fadeIn() method? Nah, I don't think so. You need to install a react-transition-group package which weighs over 3GB.
  • Can you do $.get(https://stackoverflow.com/questions/12345/adding_two_numbers_javascript) in React? NOPE.
  • Remember React 3.3.1? Me neither, because they didn't make it. Meanwhile in jQuery land: https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.3.1.min.js
  • Can you learn jQuery for free? Sure! Can you learn React for free? It'll be $500 USD and your left kidney for a conference ticket.

And many, many more.

(This is a completely serious lightning talk proposal, I promise.)
