ClojureScript REPL Workflow

ClojureScript REPL Workflow

Short write up on using REPL when developing UIs in ClojureScript.

Hot-reload on save or Eval in REPL?

Everyone's standard approach to hot-reloading is to use a tool (Figwheel or shadow-cljs) that reloads changed namespaces automatically. This works really well: you change the code, the tool picks up changed files, compiles namespaces and dependants, notifies REPL client which then pulls in compiled changes, and re-runs a function that re-renders UI.

The other approach is to use ClojureScript's REPL directly and rely only on eval from the editor. This more or less matches Clojure style workflow. This approach might be useful when you don't want tools overhead or hot-reloading becomes slow for you or you just used to this style of interactions. Also changing code doesn't always mean that you want to reload all the changes. On the other hand it is very easy to change a couple of top-level forms and forget to eval one of them.

FOREWORDS

I don't mean the snippet at the bottom of this gist to be a generic plug-n-play solution to your search needs. It is very likely to not work for you or even break things, and it certainly is not as extensively tested and genericised as your regular third-party plugin.

My goal, here and in most of my posts, is to show how Vim's features can be leveraged to build your own high-level, low-maintenance, workflows without systematically jumping on the plugins bandwagon or twisting Vim's arm.

Seeing the inferred type of a ClojureScript expression

If you are curious about the types inferred by ClojureScript, it is easy to get some insight using a macro:

(defmacro inferred-type [form]
  `'~(cljs.analyzer/infer-tag &env
       (cljs.analyzer/no-warn (cljs.analyzer/analyze &env form))))

This is the kind of dev-time macro you could refer using the new user.cljs feature.

Bocko in browser using cljs.main and synthetic index.html

First start up the REPL by issuing this command:

clj -Sdeps '{:deps {github-mfikes/e00202b2de7cc2352fedcf92b1fe60dc {:git/url "https://gist.github.com/mfikes/e00202b2de7cc2352fedcf92b1fe60dc" :sha "68ef581813e08a92bd52e7beeea1535ab7b3337f"}}}' -m cljs.main -i @index.cljs -r

Once the REPL is waiting for the browser to connect, if it doesn't automatically, open http://localhost:9000 in your browser.

You will now be running Bocko. The following forms evaluated in the REPL will draw an American flag.

clj -Sdeps '{:deps {github-mfikes/chambered {:git/url "https://github.com/mfikes/chambered" :sha "50265ab42f149450f15375117dcdf5d83c5efcf3"}}}' -m cljs.main -c chambered.core -r

After the REPL starts, if it doesn't automatically, open your browser to

http://localhost:9000

How to Change Open Files Limit on OS X and macOS
