Installing a Gem on Heroku from a Private GitHub Repo

Installing a Gem on Heroku from a Private GitHub Repo

Sometimes you want to use a gem on Heroku that is in a private repository on GitHub.

Using git over http you can authenticate to GitHub using basic authentication. However, we don't want to embed usernames and passwords in Gemfiles. Instead, we can use authentication tokens.

  1. Get an OAuth Token from GitHub

First you will need to get an OAuth Token from GitHub using your own username and "note"

A spec helper to help you find the origin of all exceptions occurring during your test run (including recovered ones), so you can reduce the abuse of exceptions for control flow. Some surprising facts emerge: a builtin == operator that raises a NoMethodError exception trying to call coerce() on nil... and other wonderful things.

OS X Screencast to animated GIF

OS X Screencast to animated GIF

This gist shows how to create a GIF screencast using only free OS X tools: QuickTime, ffmpeg, and gifsicle.

Screencapture GIF

Instructions

To capture the video (filesize: 19MB), using the free "QuickTime Player" application:

# MAC manipulators
alias random_mac='sudo ifconfig en0 ether `openssl rand -hex 6 | sed "s/\(..\)/\1:/g; s/.$//"`'
alias restore_mac='sudo ifconfig en0 ether YOUR_ORIGINAL_MAC_ADDRESS_GOES_HERE'

My way for including Rails' CSRF token in AngularJS client code
# Set up the application
app = angular.module('ratingRampage', [])
# This is an injectable property
app.value 'Authentication', {}
# Add a directive so that if we see a csrf-token attribute, this gets set
app.directive 'csrfToken', (Authentication) ->
(scope, element, attrs) ->
Authentication.csrf_token = attrs.csrfToken

Place this in ~/.git_template/hooks/pre-commit and chmod to 755. Now, ensure you have git >= 1.7.1 and run: git config --global init.templatedir '~/.git_template' Back in your repository, run git init again and the hook will appear.

# easiest way to achieve this is by calling protected #arel_attributes_values (tested in

record.class.arel_table.create_insert \
.tap { |im| im.insert(record.send(:arel_attributes_values, false)) } \

An example of using Make instead of Grunt for fast, simple and maintainable front-end asset compilation.
# A simple Makefile alternative to using Grunt for your static asset compilation
#
## Usage
#
# $ npm install
#
# And then you can run various commands:
#
# $ make # compile files that need compiling
# $ make clean all # remove target files and recompile from scratch
