Running 'crc' on a remote server

Overview: running crc on a remote server

This document shows how to deploy an OpenShift instance on a server using CodeReady Containers (crc) that can be accessed remotely from one or more client machines (sometimes called a "headless" instance). This provides a low-cost test and development platform that can be shared by developers. Deploying this way also allows a user to create an instance that uses more cpu and memory resources than may be available on his or her laptop.

While there are benefits to this type of deployment, please note that the primary use case for crc is to deploy a local OpenShift instance on a workstation or laptop and access it directly from the same machine. The headless setup is configured completely outside of crc itself, and supporting a headless setup is beyond the mission of the crc development team. Please do not ask for changes to crc to support this type of deployment, it will only cost the team time as they politely decline :)

USG ddclient Upgrade Script

How to use this script?

Why, that's simple! Copy this script to your USG, run chmod +x on it and then, as a user with sudo permission, execute it.

Shamelessly borrowed from Brittanic on the Ubiquiti Unifi forums

How to use it?

Simply run the following command (note, if you are at all security concious-don't run it and instead review the script, then copy it to your USG to execute).

curl https://gist.githubusercontent.com/troyfontaine/7e6f93e32621177fc9a94e823adc52b5/raw/fix_ddns.sh | sudo bash

open-vm-tools and VMWare Shared Folders for Ubuntu guests

(NB: adapted from this Ask Ubuntu thread -- tested to work on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS through Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy).

Unlike using VMWare Tools to enable Linux guest capabilities, the open-vm-tools package doesn't auto-mount shared VMWare folders. This can be frustrating in various ways, but there's an easy fix.

TL;DR

Install open-vm-tools and run:

sudo mount -t fuse.vmhgfs-fuse .host:/ /mnt/hgfs -o allow_other

Getting a Shell in the Docker Desktop Mac VM

2021 Update: Easiest option is Justin's repo and image

Just run this from your Mac terminal and it'll drop you in a container with full permissions on the Docker VM. This also works for Docker for Windows for getting in Moby Linux VM (doesn't work for Windows Containers).

docker run -it --rm --privileged --pid=host justincormack/nsenter1

Setting up a Docker Hub registry mirror on a Synology NAS

Instructions

  • Save the docker-compose.yml and config.yml in the same directory on one of your volumes on the NAS.
  • SSH in and use docker-compose up -d
  • Test the mirror with curl --head http://NAS-IP:55000
  • Start up docker daemons with the following option or put this in the daemon config file or copy into Docker for Mac/Windows settings. --registry-mirror=http://NAS-IP:55000
  • Pull an image and then check that it is cached in your mirror with curl http://NAS-IP:55000/v2/_catalog
    • or check that a large image isn't slow after the first pull :)
