"Pagination 101" by Faruk Ateş

Pagination 101

Article by Faruk Ateş, [originally on KuraFire.net][original] which is currently down

One of the most commonly overlooked and under-refined elements of a website is its pagination controls. In many cases, these are treated as an afterthought. I rarely come across a website that has decent pagination, and it always makes me wonder why so few manage to get it right. After all, I'd say that pagination is pretty easy to get right. Alas, that doesn't seem the case, so after encouragement from Chris Messina on Flickr I decided to write my Pagination 101, hopefully it'll give you some clues as to what makes good pagination.

Before going into analyzing good and bad pagination, I want to explain just what I consider to be pagination: Pagination is any kind of control system that lets the user browse through pages of search results, archives, or any other kind of continued content. Search results are the o

SSH known_hosts tools
# This is a short collection of tools that are useful for managing your
# known_hosts file. In this case, I'm using the '-f' flag to specify the
# global known_hosts file because I'll be adding many deploy users on this
# system. Simply omit the -f flag to operate on ~/.ssh/known_hosts
# Add entry for host
ssh-keyscan -H github.com >> /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts
# Scan known hosts
ssh-keygen -f /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts -F github.com

My git log custom output aliases
git config --global alias.hist "log --pretty=format:'%h %ad | %s%d [%an]' --graph --date=short"
git config --global alias.lol "log --graph --decorate --pretty=oneline --abbrev-commit --all"
git config --global alias.mylog "log --pretty=format:'%h %s [%an]' --graph"

To check that they've been added correctly, first run git config --list. You should see something like this in the midst of all your other configuration:

alias.hist=log --pretty=format:"%h %ad | %s%d [%an]" --graph --date=short

Each of these commands will run an ad hoc http static server in your current (or specified) directory, available at http://localhost:8000. Use this power wisely.
