What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining A Unicorn

What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining A Unicorn

Disclaimer: This piece is written anonymously. The names of a few particular companies are mentioned, but as common examples only.

This is a short write-up on things that I wish I'd known and considered before joining a private company (aka startup, aka unicorn in some cases). I'm not trying to make the case that you should never join a private company, but the power imbalance between founder and employee is extreme, and that potential candidates would

Loop through Jekyll collections and output their content as sections and articles
{% comment %}
Loops though every collection you defined in _config.yml and grabs the pages they contain; outputting title and full text with good basic html semantics.
Use page.excerpt instead of page.content to grab the first paragraph, blog list style. Markdownify is optional, depends how you authored content in your collections; I typically use Markdown.

System Design Cheatsheet

Picking the right architecture = Picking the right battles + Managing trade-offs

Basic Steps

  1. Clarify and agree on the scope of the system

    • Who is going to use it?
    • How are they going to use it?

How to make a release with Git and Maven via JGitFlow

How to make a release with Git and Maven via JGitFlow

Imagine that you are versioning your sourcecode in git and building your code via maven. You need to make releases before deploying to production regularly. What should be the strategy we need to follow for releasing?

I've used maven-release-plugin for years to make releases. It worked perfectly with maven and svn, but we started to face problems when we migrated our code to git and to make releases on git.

After checking the literature, we decided to use JGit-Flow which is a maven plugin based on and is a replacement for the maven-release-plugin enabling support for git-flow style releases via maven.

I do not want to explain the details much because there are many great posts explaining all.

Oauth2 Explanation

OAUTH2

The Problem

I’m a web app that wants to allow other web apps access to my users’ information, but I want to ensure that the user says it’s ok.

The Solution

I can’t trust the other web apps, so I must interact with my users directly. I’ll let them know that the other app is trying to get their info, and ask whether they want to grant that permission. Oauth defines a way to initiate that permission verification from the other app’s site so that the user experience is smooth. If the user grants permission, I issue an AuthToken to the other app which it can use to make requests for that user's info.

Note on encryption

Oauth2 has nothing to do with encryption -- it relies upon SSL to keep things (like the client app’s shared_secret) secure.

This assumes you already have a Yeoman app and are ready for publishing

Auto-starting VirtualBox VMs on OS X

After finding a lot of other posts on the topic that didn't work out for me this one did the trick so I'm reposting for my own sense of self preservation.

Link to original article.

Copy the Virtualbox autostart plist template file to your system's LaunchDaemons folder.

sudo cp \
