Steps to install direnv on Windows

direnv on Windows

Overview

In JavaScript projects, I used to use dotenv so that I could put local environment variables in a .env file for local development. But dotenv requires you to add code to your project. With direnv, you can put local env vars in a .envrc file and those env vars are loaded automatically in the shell.

Steps to install

For these steps, it is assummed that you have installed Git Bash on Windows. I also use VSCode as my editor.

  1. Create a folder such as c:\tools to put the direnv.exe file and add it to the Windows PATH

Working effectively with legacy code summary

WORKING EFFECTIVELY WITH LEGACY CODE

To me, legacy code is simply code without tests. I’ve gotten some grief for this definition. What do tests have to do with whether code is bad? To me, the answer is straightforward, and it is a point that I elaborate throughout the book: Code without tests is bad code. It doesn’t matter how well written it is; it doesn’t matter how pretty or object-oriented or well-encapsulated it is. With tests, we can change the behavior of our code quickly and verifiably. Without them, we really don’t know if our code is getting better or worse.

Chapter 1 Changing Software

Four Reasons to Change Software: For simplicity’s sake, let’s look at four primary reasons to change software.

[Spring, JMH] Howto integrate JMH benchmarks with Spring

Motivation

Integrate JMH (Java Microbenchmarking Harness) with Spring (Boot) and make developing and running benchmarks as easy and convinent as writing tests.

Idea

Wrap the necessary JMH boilerplate code within JUnit to benefit from all the existing test infrastructure Spring (Boot) provides. It should be as easy and convinent to write benchmarks as it is to write tests.

UPDATE (Fall 2020): This gist is an updated version to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - Installing Node.js on Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) guide, I usually just keep here notes, configuration or short guides for personal use, it was nice to know it also helps other ppl, I hope this one too.

Windows updated windows subsystem for linux to version 2, as the F.A.Q stated you can still use WSL version 1 side by side with version 2. I'm not sure about existing WSL machines surviving the upgrade process, but as always backup and 🤞. NOTE: WSL version 1 is not replace/deprecated, and there ar
