Optimizing Rust container builds

Optimizing Rust container builds

I'm a Rust newbie, and one of the things that I've found frustrating is that the default docker build experience is extremely slow. As it downloads crates, then dependencies, then finally my app - I often get distracted, start doing something else, then come back several minutes later and forget what I was doing

Recently, I had the idea to make it a little better by combining multistage builds with some of the amazing features from BuildKit. Specifically, cache mounts, which let a build container cache directories for compilers & package managers. Here's a quick annotated before & after from a real app I encountered.

Before

This is a standard enough multistage Dockerfile. Nothing seemingly terrible or great here - just a normal build stage, and a smaller runtime stage.

How to use 1Password and 2FA with eTrade

IMPORTANT!
As of May 17, 2020, python-vipaccess stopped working for provisioning new Symantec VIP Access tokens (which was its raison d'être).
As of May 27, 2020, it's working again.
It might stop working again. and we might not be able to get it to work again (see #39)

Note: Your password cannot be more than 26 characters for you to use 2FA in general. eTrade makes you enter your 2FA code appened to your password to login and limits the length of password input to 32 characters, thus further restricting the maximum length of your actual password.

Writing an OS in Rust to run on RISC-V

(This is a translation of the original article in Japanese by moratorium08.)

(UPDATE (22/3/2019): Added some corrections provided by the original author.)

Writing your own OS to run on a handmade CPU is a pretty ambitious project, but I've managed to get it working pretty well so I'm going to write some notes about how I did it.

Falsehoods programmers believe about time, in a single list

Falsehoods programmers believe about time

This is a compiled list of falsehoods programmers tend to believe about working with time.

Don't re-invent a date time library yourself. If you think you understand everything about time, you're probably doing it wrong.

Falsehoods

  • There are always 24 hours in a day.
  • February is always 28 days long.
  • Any 24-hour period will always begin and end in the same day (or week, or month).

Friday Quiz Solution
# Three people are playing the following betting game.
# Every five minutes, a turn takes place in which a random player rests and the other two bet
# against one another with all of their money.
# The player with the smaller amount of money always wins,
# doubling his money by taking it from the loser.
# For example, if the initial amounts of money are 1, 4, and 6,
# then the result of the first turn can be either
# 2,3,6 (1 wins against 4);
# 1,8,2 (4 wins against 6); or
# 2,4,5 (1 wins against 6).

API Token Authentication in Laravel 5.2 & 5.3

I recently had the need to write a small url shortening application. I am aware that this problem has been solved quite a few times before, but what is being a developer if not reinventing the wheel just for the heck of it? Custom CMS anyone?

Knowing that this was going to be a tiny RESTful API and also knowing that Laravel 5.2 had API rate limiting built in, I was eager to give it a try. Taylor Otwell being Taylor Otwell shipped 5.2 with the rate limiting defaults set up out of the box and I had my application building out short url's in a matter of minutes. The problem for me came when I wanted to start associating those short urls with a user.

Typically my applications have a UI and authentication is done through a simple login page. Obviously for a RESTful API, having a login page isn't ideal. Instead, my hope was to have users append an api_token to the end of their query string and use that to auth
