Push Yourself Assignment: TypeScript - Ann Cerveny, 1904 FEE

Push Yourself: TypeScript

Ann Cerveny 1904 FEE

The first time I was introduced to TypeScript, my front-end programming class at the Turing School was reviewing the application of PropTypes to React components. Having only ever tested data types using Test-Driven Development (TDD), I was intrigued to learn that this sort of safeguard could be added directly to the structure of a component. Shortly thereafter, I was shadowing a pair of developers and learned that they used AngularJS and TypeScript for their front-end codebase. Given its dynamic application with multiple frameworks and the endless praise of its straightforwardness, I wanted to see for myself exactly what it is about TypeScript that has developers so excited about its potential.

My research began with reviewing Medium articles to understand the 'what' and 'why' behind TypeScript. What I learned is that TypeScript is considered a 'superset' of JavaScript, meaning that it uses all of the existing features of JavaScript and adds on some enhan

Ann, Eric, and Jon's DTR for TuneIn Later

Template for DTR Memo Project: Tune In Later

Group Member Names: Eric O'Neill, Jon O'Drobinak, Ann Cerveny

Goals and Expectations for the Project (What does each group member hope to get out of this project? What do we want to achieve as a team? How will we know that we're successful?): Redux is the primary goal, so we're committed to trying to learn that as best we can, while also solidifying our knowledge and understanding of fetch. We'd like to also make the most of our test coverage and implement async testing.

Team strengths & collaboration styles (consider discussing your Pairin qualities here): Ann: Driver/navigator works best when we've planned beforehand what we'll be tackling; otherwise, I'm better off taking some space to process and put things together Eric: Driver/navigator for async testing and Redux

Project: SWAPI-Box

Group Member Names: Ann Cerveny & Alek Aker

Goals and Expectations for the Project (What does each group member hope to get out of this project? What do we want to achieve as a team? How will we know that we're successful?):

A better understanding of how to work with React, and to better familiarize ourselves with Components and Testing. We are more interested in knowing whats going on conceptually that turning in something we don't understand.

Team strengths & collaboration styles (consider discussing your Pairin qualities here):

We are hoping to work through this together and delegate tasks as needed.

In my network, I'm fortunate to have a friend that is delightful to be around, and also works for a company that I would love to be a part of; his name is Joe, and I see him as a mentor as well as a friend. I met him in my previous career as a technical editor, and we've stayed in touch since I quit my job to start at Turing.

During Mod 1, we would get together weekly to go over foundational concepts of Javascript and programming, as well as talking about tech industry issues. However, since Mod 2 began I have been less and less able to meet during our normal meeting times. My plan is to reach out after Mod 2 is done, and make a point to connect with him during the break to go over what I've learned. Through Joe, I've made several friends in the industry, and aside from enjoying their company, it would be great to reconnect with them over intermission.

Professional Story

Ann Cerveny

I first became interested in software development in college, after taking a class on Informatics. While I really enjoyed the theory behind technology and ethics, I struggled with the programming coursework and decided that I must be better suited for a software-adjacent career. As time passed, I found myself treating programming as a hobby; I would use spare afternoons to take free tech courses at the library, I used quiet evenings to take free online courses, and I started volunteering at the technology center of the Denver Public Library. As much as I enjoyed learning programming languages, I found more joy in using what I'd learned to help other people.

I decided to become a developer after a conversation with a library patron. He came up to the help desk and asked to set up an email. I walked over to his table, worked with him to create one, and as I was about to walk back to the help desk, he mentioned that he'd been incarcerated for five years, and no

Job Description

We are looking for a confident, capable developer to add to our team. This person should be able to work as a member of a fast-paced team environment, while seamlessly transitioning into independent work when necessary. This person needs to be passionate about front-end work, and has a keen sense of empathy to help us provide our desired user experience.

Agile & Feedback Reflection Guidelines

In interviews, you'll be asked about how you approach working in projects, and being able to describe how you utilize agile processes is a great way to help you stand out as a junior developer candidate. This reflection is meant to help you develop this skill.

With that in mind, please answer the following questions in your own gist about your group project:

  1. What have you learned about the use of agile vs. waterfall in software projects?

Generally, it seems as though an agile environment is a more effective means of getting product into the market and cleaning issues up as they come.

  1. How did you and your group approach project management in this project (what tools did you use, how did you hold each other accountable, etc.)?
