I got a new USB ethernet adapter because the old one had lots of issues (hence the gist in the first place). But it still uses the same Realtek 8153 chip although am using the native driver though now, AppleUSBECM.kext
In terms of my previous issues, I remember that when I clicked the little lock in the browser to view the cert, it would crash my computer. But the disconnects that required a restart were the bigger issue. (personal reference link)
I'm currently running macOS Mojave 10.14
The positive news (for me). Big Sur seems to have resolved all the issues I had with this card.
Before the upgrade to Big Sur, this was a mess. I have a Philips display (439P9H) with a built-in USB-C docking and an integrated Realtek8153. With the Apple Driver, the connection would stop working after a couple of hours. With the Realtek driver, it was slightly better - but after a day or so, the network interface would stop responding. I'd have to unplug the USB-C cable, plug it back in and the interface would work again (really annoying if you're in the middle of a video call). Before the upgrade to Big Sur I removed the Realtek driver and then upgraded. It's been perfect for me ever since.
