Falsehoods programmers believe about time, in a single list

Falsehoods programmers believe about time

This is a compiled list of falsehoods programmers tend to believe about working with time.

Don't re-invent a date time library yourself. If you think you understand everything about time, you're probably doing it wrong.

Falsehoods

  • There are always 24 hours in a day.
  • February is always 28 days long.
  • Any 24-hour period will always begin and end in the same day (or week, or month).

From Require.js to Webpack - Part 2 (the how)

This is the follow up to a post I wrote recently called From Require.js to Webpack - Party 1 (the why) which was published in my personal blog.

In that post I talked about 3 main reasons for moving from require.js to webpack:

  1. Common JS support
  2. NPM support
  3. a healthy loader/plugin ecosystem.

Here I'll instead talk about some of the technical challenges that we faced during the migration. Despite the clear benefits in developer experience (DX) the setup was fairly difficult and I'd like to cover some of the challanges we faced to make the transition a bit easier.

Use CSS :not() instead of applying and unapplying borders on navigations
.nav-tab {
...
// instead of putting it on
border-right: 1px solid #424242;
&:last-child {
border-right: 0; // and then taking it off
}
// use CSS not() to only apply to the elements you want

Why I switched from bamboo to jenkins
TL;DR - It was proving to be more buildsystem than I needed,
and I had found that there were other buildsystems that met my needs
that I felt were lighter and more nimble. It's still a fine product
that I continue to recommend to this day, I just no longer see it as
"The One True Way".

1: Bamboo was consuming a significant amount of system resources,

Instructions on how to fix npm if you've installed Node through Homebrew on Mac OS X or Linuxbrew

OBSOLETE

This entire guide is based on an old version of Homebrew/Node and no longer applies. It was only ever intended to fix a specific error message which has since been fixed. I've kept it here for historical purposes, but it should no longer be used. Homebrew maintainers have fixed things and the options mentioned don't exist and won't work.

I still believe it is better to manually install npm separately since having a generic package manager maintain another package manager is a bad idea, but the instructions below don't explain how to do that.

Fixing npm On Mac OS X for Homebrew Users

Installing node through Homebrew can cause problems with npm for globally installed packages. To fix it quickly, use the solution below. An explanation is also included at the end of this document.

I wrote this in early January 2012, but never finished it. The research and thinking in this area led to a lot of the design of Yeoman and talks like "Javascript Development Workflow of 2013", "Web Application Development Workflow" and "App development stack for JS developers" (surpisingly little overlap in those talks, btw).

Now it's June 2013 and the state of web app tooling has matured quite a bit. But here's a snapshot of the story from 18 months ago, even if a little ugly and incomplete. :p

How to make faster scroll effects?

How to make faster scroll effects?

  • Avoid too many reflows (the browser to recalculate everything)
  • Use advanced CSS3 for graphic card rendering
  • Precalculate sizes and positions

Beware of reflows

The reflow appens as many times as there are frames per seconds. It recalculate all positions that change in order to diplay them. Basically, when you scroll you execute a function where you move things between two reflows. But there are functions that triggers reflows such as jQuery offset, scroll... So there are two things to take care about when you dynamically change objects in javascript to avoid too many reflows:
