Make linting great again!

tabs vs spaces

No other topic in software development probably has so much controversy as linting.

With a wrong workflow linting can be really a pain and will slow you and your team down. With a proper setup, though, it can save you hours of manual work reformatting the code and reducing the code-review overhead.

External things that keep me motivated at work
  1. Open Source being officially part of the job, not just an "after job fun" instead of spending time with the family.
  2. Colleagues one can learn from, not those one needs to clean up after.
  3. Money matters. Only a stupid person can think that money doesn't matter in our capitalistic society. This also includes social security, medical ensurance and any other expenses. I am not mercantile, no.
  4. Soft deadlines. Having time to do things right.
  5. No pressure in being at time every day in the office. We all got our issues.
  6. Workout during working hours. Possibility to go quickly for a run or to the gym.
  7. Office is optional. I prefer to work from any location I want. Sometimes being in the office is nice though.
  8. Good sitting conditions: good chairs, gym ball, stay desk, sofas.
  9. Relaxation room or nap room.

Japan Recommendations and Tips

Japan Recommendations and Tips

From @helenvholmes to you 💖

Important Stuff!!

If you're nervous about traveling in a country where you can't read anything: restaurants often have menus with pictures. The train system is all doubled in English. When you get in and you're exhausted from a huge flight, I recommend Airport Limousine Bus. As soon as you get out of customs, you will see a big orange counter for the company. Just tell them the hotel, and they will drop you off right at the entrance.

Most places take credit cards, but you’ll need cash for the trains. There are normally ATMs inside the 7/11s. It's worth it to get a Suica card.

Sim cards?: You can get one at the BIC Camera Shibuya.

IndexedDB Full Text Search (Proof of Concept)

This demonstrates the implementation of full text search for documents in Indexed DB.

  • Word-breaking and stemming is used to create a list of terms for each document.
  • Document records are annotated with the list of terms when added to the database.
  • A multi-entry index on the list of terms is populated.
  • A query is similarly processed into a list of terms.
  • A join over the terms is implemented using multiple cursors on the index.

The necessity of annotating records with the word list to populate the index is a limitation of the current Indexed DB API. A feature request to support custom

TL;DR Better Redux involves using maps of action types to reducers, not switch/case statements

Distilling the Essence of Reducers

Redux has brought the notion of reducer back into the awareness of many developers for whom they are a novel concept. In fact they are quite simple, and used all the time in such things as SUM aggregations in databases, where they compute a single value from many.

It's great that Redux has made reducers known to a broader audience, though they are relatively ancient concepts in programming, in fact. But the particular way Redux illustrates a reducer in its documentaion is, in my opinion, with a coding style that is harder to extend and read than it should be. Let's distill reducers down to their essensce, and build up Redux reducers in a way that lowers complexity, and helps separate Redux idioms from your business logic.

The simplest reducer

A reducer is a pure function that accepts more arguments than it returns. That is to say - one whose "arity" is greater than 1. It 'reduces' the two things you pass it down to a single value. Here are two reducers, in a map
