Upgrade PostgreSQL 9.6.5 to 10.0 using Homebrew (macOS)
After automatically updating Postgres to 10.0 via Homebrew, the pg_ctl start command didn't work.
The error was "The data directory was initialized by PostgreSQL version 9.6, which is not compatible with this version 10.0."
Database files have to be updated before starting the server, here are the steps that had to be followed:
# need to have both 9.6.x and latest 10.0 installed, and keep 10.0 as default
brew unlink postgresql
brew install postgresql@9.6
brew unlink postgresql@9.6
brew link postgresql

Who pays when startup employees keep their equity?

Who pays when startup employees keep their equity?

JD Maturen, 2016/07/05, San Francisco, CA

As has been much discussed, stock options as used today are not a practical or reliable way of compensating employees of fast growing startups. With an often high strike price, a large tax burden on execution due to AMT, and a 90 day execution window after leaving the company many share options are left unexecuted.

There have been a variety of proposed modifications to how equity is distributed to address these issues for individual employees. However, there hasn't been much discussion of how these modifications will change overall ownership dynamics of startups. In this post we'll dive into the situation as it stands today where there is very near 100% equity loss when employees leave companies pre-exit and then we'll look at what would happen if there were instead a 0% loss rate.

What we'll see is that employees gain nearly 3-fold, while both founders and investors – particularly early investors – get dilute

Ember Addon Essentials -- A checklist of some of the finer details to keep in mind when developing Ember addons

Ember Addon Essentials

This document is meant to be a brief "checklist" of things to setup for your Ember addon when beginning development in order to have the best possible architecture and workflow out of the gate. For more comprehensive material, the following are bookshelf-caliber:

Future-proofing your Ember 1.x code

This post is also on my blog, since Gist doesn't support @ notifications.

Components are taking center stage in Ember 2.0. Here are some things you can do today to make the transition as smooth as possible:

  • Use Ember CLI
  • In general, replace views + controllers with components
  • Only use controllers at the top-level for receiving data from the route, and use Ember.Controller instead of Ember.ArrayController or Ember.ObjectController
  • Fetch data in your route, and set it as normal properties on your top-level controller. Export an Ember.Controller, otherwise a proxy will be generated. You can use Ember.RSVP.hash to simulate setting normal props on your controller.

Coffee

  • East Village - Third Rail, *Box Kite, Ninth Street Espresso (not on 9th Street!), Bluebird
  • West Village - Third Rail, *Stumptown, Blue Bottle
  • SoHo / Nolita / Little Italy / Chinatown - *Gasoline, Happy Bones, La Colombe Torrefaction, Bowery
  • Williamsburg - Tobys Estate, Blue Bottle
  • Brooklyn Heights - *Cafe Pedlar

Ones marked with a star are generally good coffee, but not to my taste. Especially tendency for a light, watery extraction. But otherwise good.
