How to Use

Take the following URL

https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=people&epa=FILTERS&filters=

Replace /search/top/ with the appropriate general search type (see headings below). One filter from each second-level header can be combined with each other, but I don't believe you can combine multiple filters from the same second-level header.

Replace the word people with your keyword search term (this is sadly a required field). It does not seem to be "semantic", and it only serves to add another filter to the below semantic filters.

Find any additional semantic filter(s) below (the JSON) that you want to filter on. Use this page for testing your JSON, but before submitting make sure you remove all whitespace from your JSON - you can set the "JSON Template" drop down to Compact in the formatter if you like, it will remove all whitespace for you. Note also that often there is JSON embedded within JSON. This is where you'll see a backslash before a quote (\"). Make sure to leave those backslashes alone.

When you combine filters, put them together in the same JSON object. For example, if I take Posts From a Page

{"rp_author":"{\"name\":\"author\",\"args\":\"119375054750638\"}"}

and combine with Posts I've Interacted

{"interacted_posts":"{\"name\":\"interacted_posts\",\"args\":\"\"}"}

the combined filter should look like this:

{
    "rp_author":"{\"name\":\"author\",\"args\":\"119375054750638\"}",
    "interacted_posts":"{\"name\":\"interacted_posts\",\"args\":\"\"}"
}

and compact down to:

{"rp_author":"{\"name\":\"author\",\"args\":\"119375054750638\"}","interacted_posts":"{\"name\":\"interacted_posts\",\"args\":\"\"}"}

Next, find a Base64 encoder and paste the compacted JSON into it. Encode the JSON above and you see the following:

eyJycF9hdXRob3IiOiJ7XCJuYW1lXCI6XCJhdXRob3JcIixcImFyZ3NcIjpcIjExOTM3NTA1NDc1MDYzOFwifSIsImludGVyYWN0ZWRfcG9zdHMiOiJ7XCJuYW1lXCI6XCJpbnRlcmFjdGVkX3Bvc3RzXCIsXCJhcmdzXCI6XCJcIn0ifQ==

Remove any equals signs at the end (Facebook doesn't need them) and then put the Base64'd JSON at the end of the URL you built above, after filters=

https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=people&epa=FILTERS&filters=eyJycF9hdXRob3IiOiJ7XCJuYW1lXCI6XCJhdXRob3JcIixcImFyZ3NcIjpcIjExOTM3NTA1NDc1MDYzOFwifSIsImludGVyYWN0ZWRfcG9zdHMiOiJ7XCJuYW1lXCI6XCJpbnRlcmFjdGVkX3Bvc3RzXCIsXCJhcmdzXCI6XCJcIn0ifQ

This one is different... I haven't figured out how it works yet. The ref= parameter decodes into something with a session ID or something:

I hope someone will create a simple (python?) tool for generating search urls, so noobs like me can also continue to use these search features.

What a sad day for OSINT.

Technically it is possible to make a "backend" software that will make it easy/user friendly to build the search strings and encode them in base64.

It should take just few days to see some of those pages (FB search engines) to appears. :octocat:

Did you do it on the web interface or by generate it somehow? How did you do it?

Exact. The string after the first "="

does not seem to be encoded as the string before. That is the string that can be found by clicking on the "100 people like this" in the Page tab upon search. But I couldn't find a way to decode it.

Agreed. I've looked into it as well and it seems to be one of two things: a database cursor (which is basically just a randomly generated ID - unpredictable) or server-side encrypted text, both of which make if difficult if not impossible to "forge" on the client.

Sorry but he did not stole "your" code, it's FB code,.

Glad you explained how the search algo work now in this Gist 👍 , but it's not "your code", it's not even "code" it's a nice and clear explanation on how FB search work nothing less nothing more.

So maybe he read your GIST maybe he just used his own brain to understand how it work and he build a search engine. 😉

He just made a nice GUI to be able to make FB search query easily, and there will be lot more in the next days as people will look at it more closely. :octocat:

But moreover it's pretty childish and vain to think that you will be alone to understand how the new FB search is working, it's not rocket science, it's there in plain sight you just have to observe it to understand how it work.

There is nothing unique in the code of "whopostedwhat "even the design (fonts, colors, button, fields) seem stolen from FB design... :octocat:

@sowdust Many thanks, indeed now it works in Safari! But it seems like we really can not search for all the photos a user was tagged in anymore, correct? :(

E.g. before it was always: facebook.com/search/userID/photos-tagged
(and there was also facebook.com/search/userID/photos-of I think but the tagged one was always the most important one for our research)

He literally copy-pasted the Javascript I wrote for Henk's whopostedwhat site, dude (and the rest of the whopostedwhat site by the other authors). If you looked up the Creative Commons license it require attribution which this guy erased and put his own name on, so CC is not even a defense.

I shared this so that others can look at and build upon it, I have no problem at all with the work @sowdust and @Kleissner are doing (thanks :) ), it's just lame when people take others' code and put their own name on it, especially when it violates the license.

Thanks for giving me an idea, Irina. I made one search for python pages (https://www.facebook.com/search/pages/?q=python) and copied the encrypted ID for likers of the first 20 results. These are the page IDs + the encrypted string. I wonder if there is a pattern?

I already see 6 results with longer than normal IDs, I wonder what causes it.

@nemec it would be nice to include searching for two values of the same kind (e.g. Software Engineers at Google) in an online tool. See above how.

Is it more than one word in the page names for the longer IDs? Or just longer numerical IDs? I don't know.

@nemec it would be nice to include searching for two values of the same kind (e.g. Software Engineers at Google) in an online tool. See above how.
It's an encoded {"employer":"{"name":"users_employer","args":"404194816428403","args":"104958162837"}"}

This doesn't seem to work for me. I encoded it, but it returns people named Mike, even those not SW engineers and not at Google. As far as I know, Facebook doesn't allow two of the same criteria like that.

Very good point. All of the longer encrypted IDs have 16 digit numerical IDs. The shorter ones have 15 digit numerical IDs or less.

@braingain this isn‘t what I was talking about. Before the changes you could view all Tagged Photos of a User through the Graph search - even if you’re not friends with that person.
This doesn’t seem possible anymore.
Would love to have a final answer on this from people more knowledgeable than me.

@nemec it would be nice to include searching for two values of the same kind (e.g. Software Engineers at Google) in an online tool. See above how.
It's an encoded {"employer":"{"name":"users_employer","args":"404194816428403","args":"104958162837"}"}

This doesn't seem to work for me. I encoded it, but it returns people named Mike, even those not SW engineers and not at Google. As far as I know, Facebook doesn't allow two of the same criteria like that.

You might be right, going to test more.
In the past, FB used to allow multiple values, but that was in the "find friends" dialog.

I see what you are saying! It is possible through the UI, though your URL will be different than the graph one. Depends on the privacy settings, of course.

Thanks for giving me an idea, Irina. I made one search for python pages (https://www.facebook.com/search/pages/?q=python) and copied the encrypted ID for likers of the first 20 results. These are the page IDs + the encrypted string. I wonder if there is a pattern?

Can you please explain how do you find the encrypted id for pages/users?

It is extracted from the actual URL to list 'people that liked X'.
Steps to reproduce:
Visit http://facebook.com as a connected user.
Search 'Python' in Pages
Click on '....K people like this' under the group name. This is the parameter you are looking for

Example url for the Python Page:
https://www.facebook.com/search/227892847759553/likers?f=AbqcCuWIsu9dzLCey7DV8dkx4nqbdF7qf2fK_-ojfcu08QLk40bxcqpSNBynyMlneJ8mFV4pEi7yz4rnyajGnlp0GwT0Cny-tRtoiWuTHtPb3_GH6Xs14PW0ucs06gQpMzI&ref=snippets

Is this a OR search ie, Named Miked AND (worked in Google OR worked as Developer)
I've changed the order of the arguments and seem to get exactly the same result.

I'm unable to do a similar search to a one in the past where it would show me "Friends of my friends who are friends with ____" or "Friends of friends of my friends who are friends with ______" with the "Friends of Friends" and "Mutual Friends" and "Friends of People" options. Anybody got a clue how to do it?

It seems to show me friends of friends of an individual (but doesn't show me the last link in the chain for each person found e.g. who is actually friends with the target person. It's only showing friends OF friends.

Hey sowdust,
This search program you made is amazing
Is it possible for you to add filter "likes"?
There are 4 options right now, and it would be nice to add like

1.City
2. School
3. Employer
4. Friends with
"5. likes"

thanks a lot in advance :)

For example, people living in London who likes "The Beatles"

Hello friends!

First let me thank you guys for your hard work. Your findings really are helping a lot of people that need to do open research (including me).

So, i was playing around with the scripts and i've found out that the chronosort is not working properly (posts still are out of order even if you include that parameter in the string).

Am i doing something wrong? I'm feeling like there should be a :true argument or something to it, but i can't seem to make it work.

Hello Meloman, thanks for answering!

I'm using @sowdust's page (https://sowdust.github.io/fb-search/)
For example, if i try to sort POSTS --> By Most Recent --> + Filter date (Like 6-1-2019 to 6-13-2019) --> + Merge Public Posts
Code goes like this:
rp_chrono_sort { chronosort : }
rp_creation_time {"start_year":"2019","start_month":"2019-6","end_year":"2019","end_month":"2019-6","start_day":"2019-6-1","end_day":"2019-6-13"}
rp_author { merged_public_posts : }
Result is like this:

https://www.facebook.com/search/posts/?q=Barcelona&epa=FILTERS&filters=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

Actually, it seems its sorting properly, but it sorts by page / source first... and then by date. So if you have posts from many sources, we get things out of order (considering overall results).

Could we change that somehow?

Thanks a lot for your patience and time. I'm kinda new to this!

have you seen this workaround ?
https://mtg-bi.com/content/facebook-graph-search-workaround
Example of request with built-in intersect (stories-liked (4), stories-liked (140)) - posts that Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan liked):
{"view":"list","encoded_query":"{"bqf":"intersect(storiesliked(4),storiesliked(140))","browse_sid":null,"vertical":"none","post_search_vertical":null,"intent_data":null,"filters":[],"has_chrono_sort":false,"query_analysis":null,"subrequest_disabled":false,"token_role":"NONE","preloaded_story_ids":[],"extra_data":null,"disable_main_browse_unicorn":false,"entry_point_scope":null,"entry_point_surface":null,"squashed_ent_ids":[],"source_session_id":null,"preloaded_entity_ids":[],"preloaded_entity_type":null,"query_source":null}","encoded_title":"","ref":"unknown","logger_source":"www_main","typeahead_sid":"","tl_log":false,"impression_id":"","experience_type":"grammar","exclude_ids":null,"browse_location":"browse_location:browse","trending_source":null,"reaction_surface":null,"reaction_session_id":null,"is_trending":true,"topic_id":null,"place_id":null,"callsite":"browse_ui:init_result_set","has_top_pagelet":true,"display_params"{"crct":"none"},"cursor":"","page_number":1,"em":false,"tr":null}

yes I was looking into it and I confirm it works

I have been using Postman to try and replicate the results. So far, I either get that the request can't be processed or that I am not logged into FB. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I found the BrowseScrollingSetPagelet link a few days ago and it definitely seems to give access to the Graph Search. I'm not sure what Facebooks reaction may be if I build this into a search tool.

my mistake, it's back online. I will see what I can do when I have time for the other searches. The web page at the URL https://sowdust.github.io/fb-search/ will be updated. Cloned webpages, including the ones asking for donations (sic), will not, so make sure to check the right url.

@sowdust I had issues with cloned pages of my early search tools, some of which charged subscriptions but left my branding on the site so people thought it was me and contacted me for support. I changed to doing the URL construction on the server side and that seemed to stop the problem.

@ShaneMcCusker Is it possible to do searches like "posts commented by some_fb_user" now when Graph Search is broken? It was super useful for finding comments made by friends, journalists and bloggers. This is the function I miss the most...

@sowdust I've been trying to do a simple query of stories-liked to start with and I'm not quite sure what I am doing wrong. Sometimes it will give me a few results that were more from anyone with the name john smith rather than a specific john smith. One time the user id showed in your search tool as id: 129381283129 but I don't know how I got it there. Anyway, the query is showing with specific id and stories-liked; so now do I enter anything into the regular fb search? Thank you for doing this. It has made me work on some skills with Postman etc.

Hi! It works for Mark Zuckerberg's facebook profile for photos-tagged directive. However, it won't return any result for a random profile that I tested (the profile is tagged in several photos) and it returns "end of the results" (attached). Is there any possibility that the problem is caused by other parameters inside the data JSON?

Hi! I discovered that in logged out condition, there are some profiles when trying to be accessed using https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=<PROFILE_ID>, that will return page not found while the others return the overview of the respective profile. Surprisingly, it is also related to the search. The profiles that return the overview of the respective profile will return a result when is requested, while the profiles that return page not found, it won't return the result. The examples that won't return the result are: 560589008, 509345950 while the profile that can return the result is 100009303507205

@meloman-a also, how to apply the regular expression to scroll to the next page? Thanks!

@mario7lorenzo
For not only these ids 560589008, 509345950, but for 100009303507205 and any other should do with authorisation. Even if profile opens in logged out condition and returns some result it does not mean that it returns whole result.

"also, how to apply the regular expression to scroll to the next page?" - regular expression applies in your programm code. But if you searching it in browser, search by phrase {"cursor":"

@mario7lorenzo maybe you need to do requests with authorization. Give please id(s) that not returns results.

The examples that won't return the result are: 560589008, 509345950 while the profile that can return the result is 100009303507205

this might have to do with the user's profile settings. if you want an easier way to use the method you're using, you can try with my firefox extension: https://github.com/sowdust/searchbook/

What authorisation are we talking about?
Any request that i try as not logged-in user (incognito mode) is returning something (or blank payload).
Any request that i tried as a logged-in user returns this:

for (;;);{"__ar":1,"error":1357004,"errorSummary":"Sorry, something went wrong","errorDescription":"Please try closing and re-opening your browser window.","payload":null,"bootloadable":{},"ixData":{},"bxData":{},"gkxData":{},"qexData":{},"lid":"650489845610120"}

@q99qk72xy to work with authorization you need to add fb_dtsg_ag paremeter to your url.
You can find it by regular expression "async_get_token":"([^"]+) in view-source:https://www.facebook.com/ for example.

Thanks for this!

Edit: async_get_token must be a GET param in my url, but it doesn't return the expected result. Still the same error message

Hi everyone. Been just watching all this. Great work by some people here. I'm noob about all this, and all I can say is the searchbook extension for FF (https://github.com/sowdust/searchbook ) seems to doesn't work anymore. It was removed from my FF extensions, and when trying it to upload it says the file(s) might be damaged...

Hi everyone! First of all, great work! You guys absolutely rock!

My special thanks to @sowdust for the amazing work you put on.
Also, congratz on sharing (many people would NOT share codes like this).

I have a really simple question: Why did you decide to roll with a Firefox Add-on this time? Was it a creative option or was it necessary for the solution to work?

I'm asking because a webpage (html + js) from the Searchbook you created would be a dream come true for me, so i'm very interested in working to create a version that resembles the http://sowdust.github.io/fb-search code. I'm just afraid i lack the technical skills - so i could use some guidance.

Thanks in advance!

@sowdust

I just tried using the extension right now and it fails to intercept results when searching after setting the keywords.it worked before but it now displays normal results and the red text that used to appear doesn't anymore

thanks for your work

I don't think that having a page set up like the old inteltechniques would be a great idea. Keeping it below the radar with a firefox extension probably will not trigger an immediate reaction by Facebook.

With the Firefox extension it is much easier to exploit an existing authentication (a standalone page would need to ask users' credentials), the query building done by Facebook and the pagination and visualization of results.
