With
Apple Silicon
you can restore inDFU
mode.Caveats
MacBook Air mid 2012
withMonterey
installed withOpenCore legacy patcher
. Check minimum OS version to use with Confugurator 2, as well as check your closet, maybe you’ve got a good candidate for second Mac 😊USB-A to C
orUSB-C to C
cable, depending on second Mac age (charger cable for second case will work)Benefits
Air mid 2012
toM1 Air (2020)
to “actually fast” usingM1 Pro 2021
toM1 Air (2020)
and, finally: damn blazing fast, usingM1 Air (2020)
toM1 Pro (2021)
: 1 minute to Apple logo, 5+ min to Recovery (Pro
, at least, 2021, apart fromM1 air
, doesn’t fetch activation record during flashing process, so you need to activate fromRecovery
).SIP
/ policies tamperingthis all actually means you can restore from 3-4 to 5-6 Silicons per hour 😀
Tell me you can do better with other methods 😊 (without 3rd party software. which actually exists and can do that fast, paired with Adruino programmed for install automation)
Procedure
Fetch
IPSW
forM1
from ipsw.me.Make sure the Internet connection stays on.
Connect
second Mac
toDFU
port ofTarget
, withTarget
put intoDFU
mode (order of actions may not matter, at least as per my experience ).For laptops the
DFU
port isUSB-C / Thunderbolt
port on the left side, the furthest from you.Follow official Apple docs to put Silicon in DFU.
if done right, the device will appear in
DFU
mode inApple Configurator 2
.Drag-n-drop the
IPSW
on the dashed square. ChooseRestore
. Wait 😊(4. for
M1 Pro
it’s possible that you would need to activate it. Do this if requested!)Get to Welcome screen and follow the procedure as usual, except the
important: skip connecting to your Wi-Fi! it will nag your 2-3 times and won’t bother anymore.
if it’s M1 Pro or Max: though it worked for me without it, you may also want to fully disable your AP so that installer wouldn’t use network cached in NVRAM which had been cached during the activation process.
(6a. For any M1 also: just out of paranoia if applicable, stay away from open Wi-Fi spots).
Past Welcome screen, modify
/etc/hosts
, as per this thread, to block the MDM enrolment.Reboot (just to check it all works), connect to your network and enjoy fully untethered experience!
